Default Bhuvan: India's answer to Google Earth

Imagine if you could count the lions in Gir or fishermen find concentration of fish in the sea, just by dragging a mouse on a computer screen.

After Chandrayaan-1 mission, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is all set to add another feather to its cap.

On the lines of Google Earth, ISRO will soon launch an IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) image portal called “Bhuvan”, which will provide online maps based on Geographical Information System (GIS).

Bhuvan, meaning earth, is the addition to the numerous scientific innovations by SAC and is a satellite mapping tool, just like Google Earth or Wikimapia, but allows you to zoom far closer than the aerial view from a chopper. If Google Earth shows details upto 200 metres distance and Wikimapia upto 50 metres, Bhuvan will show images upto 10 metres, which means you can easily see details upto a three floor high building and also add information.

Unlike the other two webmaps, Bhuvan will focus only on the Indian sub-continent.

The information on Bhuvan will be layer wise and the options of viewing filtered information will be available. Inputs from a lot of local players, like farmers, fishermen and likes who know the local area in and out, will also being integrated in Bhuvan.

Advantages of Bhuvan over Google Earth

    Bhuvan (Google)

Zoom levels up to 10 mt (Zoom levels up to 200 mt)
    Multi-layer information (Single layer information)
Images upgraded every year (Images upgraded every 4 years)
Options of viewing on different dates (No alternate viewing options)
Uses Indian satellites (Uses international satellites)

That would be awesome if only Special Members could access it. Or else India will lose all it's privacy. And also it will make hunters job easy if the could track the movements of lions and other animals by using computer. But on the other hand that will help forest guards keep track of all the activities. Sort of like a double edged blade.

It shows our capability in remote sensing. It gives better pictures of Indian terrain when compared to Google Earth which focus mainly on US and Europe.

I tried it today and the resolution is not what they been saying... its not better then Google Earth. Leave alone seeing the house you cant even see the streets properly..

May be its initial phase and the areas I checked are not supported to that resolution but I checked Newdelhi and Mumbai and a few places in Punjab and UP its the same every where you cant see much clarity atall... Google earth images are a whole lot better.
