India could soon have 11 digit mobile numbers

Quote:
Mobile numbers in India are currently 10 digits long. The ever growing mobile customer base is now demanding that the number of digits be increased.

The Indian department of telecom is now considering an 11 digit long mobile number system.

An inside source said: “With so many telecom service providers and a growing customer base, the need for new numbers and their consequent shortage will be felt soon.”

India remains one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world. The country sees an addition of millions of new mobile phone users every month.

The telecom operators in the country are prepared to handle this new specification.

as i have the news, by august or September this year new series number with prefix will be circulated and by Jan 2010 all numbers will have to use prefix of 9
i didnt understand their strategy as once new 11 digit numbers are circulated how can the current users have 10 digits....? but surely its 9 to be added as prefix.

for start they would simply put a 9 as prefix to existing No.s
Then the other new available series beginning from 1 to 8 (followed by 10 more digits) would be gradually allotted to new service providers/consumers.

Remember there was a time when all mobiles started with 98? Then the other series 90 to 99 got allotted. Well, the process is starting again.

When I was a kid, the Landline No. (in a metro) used to have 6 digits. then it became 7. then 8. and now its time for 9 digits.

Reminds me of the great "Lion King" song - "the circle of life........"

Wouldn't it be more logical if they could give a specific prefix number to a certain operator. for example: 2 for BSNL, 3 for reliance, 4 for Vodafone etc...

Well pre-fixing 9 is in funnel..Let's see what exactly implemented when they eventually introduce it...

that would defeat the basic principles of mobile no. portability

But it would open up a lot more numbers for each and every operator. Besides I think that this whole number portability is for pre paid customers only. High value post paid customers don't change their numbers as much as college going youth do IMO.

^^^
The very basic concept of MNP is that the operator should not be identifiable by the no. and any no. can be used with any operator. Towards this end, TRAI has already decided to vacate the 93 (Reliance CDMA), 94 (BSNL), 92 (TATA) series for the general category. Further, the 95 (adjacent SDCA landline dialing) has also been vacated for the mobile operators.

So there is no use taking a step back to older system alongwith 11 digit numbering.

Before causing anymore blunder in the Indian Telecom industry, TRAI should realize that they are here for our convenience not to cause disturbances. Stop doing experiments. It's a matter of 350 million users. An estimated 20 million man/month will be collectively required to clear up this mess. Billions of cards and brochures have to be reprinted. Big numbers will be ugly and confusing. Lastly, the telecom companies had raised more than 12 thousand crores by selling special numbers to the corporates, professionals and individuals. TRAI should arrange to refund the full amount with interest because while issuing the numbers people were promised of 30 years of usage.
