Thumbs down Shah Rukh Khan Hasseled at US Airport

First it was x-Prez Dr Abdul Kalam , now its SRK ...ironically this incident happens right after srk's movie about racial profiling of Muslims in the West (My Name is Khan)...lol

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan on Saturday said that he was "angry and humiliated" for being detained at the Newark International Airport in New Jersey, and asserted that the incident was "absolutely uncalled for".

"It was absolutely uncalled for I think, me having just finished working there for more than a month, just a couple of weeks ago. They said I have a common name which is causing the delay, checked my bags...I felt angry and humiliated," Shahrukh Khan said in a statement.

Khan further said the US authorities checked all his baggage, including the hand baggage, and did not allow him to make a phone call for nearly an hour.

"Only these guys just would not let me through. Finally, they allowed me to make a call, which I did and the Indian Consulate helped me through," Khan said.

Khan said that he told the authorities of him being a movie star and the reason for visiting the country. But, nothing seemed to convince the immigration officer, who did not listen to him at all.

"I was really hassled at the American Airport because of my name being Khan. The couple of hours of interrogation wanting to know if I know anyone in America, while all around people were vouching for me from India and Pakistan," Khan added.

Khan, who was in US to attend the Independence Day function, was subjected to two-hour-long ordeal at the airport. He was released after Congress MP Rajiv Shukla spoke to the authorities in the US and the Indian consulate. (ANI)
    -yahoo news (India)
strangely enough the US Yahoo site is giving a different version of the story..

We often face these issues. The people at immigration get a kick out of mishandling/misapropriating celebrities at the excuse of security. We could retaliate in similar ways but that will be dragging ourselves to their level. But some protest must be made.

If Dr APJ Abdul Kalam can be harassed by a Foreign Airline staff in India itself, there is nothing strange with this happening with SRK.

I feel its not just celebrities but South Asians in general and muslims in particular

Have you faced any such issues on your recent visits there ?

    Twice.

Once I was detained at LA airport and I missed my connecting flight. They asked me why I had come, how long I would stay, etc. and made me go to a special window/room where I found that my fellow accompanists were people with criminal records. But at the counter, the lady appeared extremely surprised at me being sent there and asked me why I was there. I told her that I am surprised myself. Then she asked a couple of general questions (about final destination, having money, etc.) and without much ado cleared me. The interview barely lasted 2 minutes but the wait was 4 hours that made me miss my flight.

Second time they frisked my luggage at Indianapolis because they saw cannisters inside the checked in bag (these were Gillette Shaving Gels). They left me later (fuming).

But apart from that removing shoes, belts, coins, etc. is the normal thing. Once I was frisked also.

Yes they are always doing this after 9/11 but this is not the way to suspect all south Asian.I think we all have to do some kind of protest for this type of incident.

    sorry j4k...
    that was rude.

but i have some suggestions to make.

    1. if Shahrukh khan can write on a 10 Rs. stamp paper that he wont go US again for any of his shows, he can surely bash US for the 2 hour thingy (that was for Shahrukh, and not for you. )
    2. It was bad that you were held just for carrying only Gillette Shave jels(in back its written inflammabious)
    3. One should have a close look on the Movie Final Destination, cause they may ask any question concerning it.
    4. They are rude...so be calm with them, or you may end up in a rectangular glass room, from where only they can see you but you wont be able to take a glance of them...

    now i get serious.

i feel, Indians go there, so they do these rude things. and after the 911 they became more agressive towards the Indians.(basically South Asians)
as security officers are everywhere the same.

now take a look on what happened to me on my way to Boston for cancer operation.(thats in Delhi )
security officer comes to me(i was with my elder bro)
knocks me if i was SC (my full name )
i said yes, he tells to get up as if was going to beat me right up there...

i even didnt asked anything cause i was very weak by then and couldnt try a Taekwondo kick on his knee.

i was taken aside.(cause no room was available and he asked me in public, as if i was a thief)

whats your name(arrey you asked me already)
what your father does(then he became normal)
what do you do?(he became again)
who is this(thats my bro man)
    what he does?(he works)
    where(banglore)
what is he doing here(he will go with me, you suck)
whats your motto to go US(cancer operatsia)
    which part(kidney)
    what(kidneyyyyy)

his small bouque of questions lasted about 1 hour 15 minutes. and there were two other cops(without uniform caps)
then he said Ok Go like if he was the person arranging the flight, visa, operation papers for me...

still now that stinky business makes my belly gas chambers burn, my bones get tight to kick someone...

but atlast i think that man was doing his duty and i shouldnt think like that...

so in a way, if an american does(as they are more cautious than Indian ones) i have no feeling for it... :hammer:

Even though I am not a big fan of profiling, we have to understand
that national security comes above all. And there are some benefits
of profiling when there are terrorists wowing your destruction.

Sharukh Khan was not singled out because he was a south asian.
He was singled out probably because of his name or because
    of a random search.

He doesn't deserve any special consideration just because he is
a movie star. The officials probably never heard of him there.
It's not like he is Gandhiji or something

He can protest the profiling based on his name, but to him complaining
that a star is treated this way is naive. Who the hell cares who
Sharuk Khan is. Everyone is equal and will be searched.

I had an experience both at Rome airport where I had machine
guns pointed at me and at US where I was questioned for two hours
but that was during the gulf war and I totally understand and
cooperated. I did not raise a big stink about how I was a big shot
in my village and my ancestors were kings etc.

Sharukh Khan needs to let go of his ego, he sucks anyway ;-)

    -PF

p.s just read the Yahoo story and it seems reasonable.
Indians are very good at knee-jerk reactions. Not to
mention a distinct flair for flouting rules and demanding
    preferential treatmend

it's because the terrorists who bombed the WTC were not
    blonde and blue eyed.

It is unfortunate, but you have to do it to prevent future terrorist
    attacks.

and you can hardly call the Japanese peaceful, remember they
    attacked Pearl Harbor first.

The US officials at the airport were doing their job. Its good to see that they don't differentiates people based on status (celebrity or common man). I believe no body above the law. The law is same for everyone. I hope that they follow the same thing here in India also.

If that US offcial is doing his job, then there is no point of crying about that.. and if he(Offcial) did because of SRK last name than that's obviously not good.. I don't know what was the scenario when same happens to former president Mr.Kalam..

As someone mentioned that indian official also should do their duty, But if any celebrity comes they always forgot their duties..

    i have another opinion...

those muddleheads who are crying that Khan was bashed up cause of "My name is Khan" must also think that there are many many instances of americans being holden up @ our airports (and that too for money and this is not lie)
or in Russia many Indians are grand checked at airports, then where are your thoughts of racism???just because Russia is a friendly nation, we cant bash them???

i cannot understand the head and tail of Shahrukh's words.. either he wants to earn some Minority name attached with him like Chocolatey actor Imran Hasmi ???

once Shahrukh was held by a Delhi police cop for being an outsider at his own film's launch...(maybe Dil Aaashna hai - his first films) so where were this me-being-muslim thoughts?? i am concluding this as a major publicity stunt of SRK...

I wonder what took indian media months to bring the issue of Mr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam into the notice of public. While this time, the SRK Episode is in limelight within no time. As Ramesh said, the officer did their duty. There's nothing to cry foul about it. And our Indian Security agencies have to learn a lot from them. Being a celebrity doesn't mean that he is above law. They should learn to respect tge laws of the country they visit. I think this issue should not be given the importance.

US security officials are in a paranoid mode after 9/11. They are doing this to so many people. It is to have occasional sensation otherwise they will just take it for granted.

Policemen of everywhere are earning their bread cause of their sincerety to job...

and every policeman will define his duty as much he can...

so no fight with a police wala.. these are a bunch of strong men coded with law.. but sometimes they dont feel bad in keeping a beautiful hand somewhere on your upper part of the body... so beware. no clashes with them...

I am not against rule being applying to all. But this rule is racism much like Hitler rule of Jews for keeping security. Which at first involve alienating & then holocaust.
Asians are being single out for this rule.

Your statement had no logic. Is it not racism to single out Asians? Counter this anybody alongwith my above statement.
PS: All Indian actors are dumb who don't know how to act. SRK is dumbest who used to bleats like a goat. This is my opinion which varies from people to people.

Wasn't it was a routine for Hitler to alienate Jews? So according to you it was good.

Asians are singled out because asians are flooding their country...

if you have heard about 911 there werent any europians.. were there any???:blushing:

i have no regards for SRK because he goes there and earn... if he can say, I wont go back again , i will really feel respect for him.. besides that he keeps on saying, i am a muslim, i am a muslim....

SRK and the Indian media must behave otherwise its going to be a problem for normal Indians as well.. cause they will not overlook Indians, but will be more severe from now...

I would have reacted the same way you have .... if not for an incident which caused me to change my ideas 180 degrees

Sharukh Khan was not singled out because he was a south asian.
He was singled out probably because of his name or because
    of a random search.
He was singled out because he was both Muslim and South Asian.Thats what we call Racial profiling

He can protest the profiling based on his name, but to him complaining
that a star is treated this way is naive. Who the hell cares who
Sharuk Khan is. Everyone is equal and will be searched.
    what are you suggesting ?
That a movie star will carry out a terrorist attack ,so all South Asian Movie stars and politicians should be searched ?

I can understand that srk is a non-entity outside india .

I had an experience both at Rome airport where I had machine
guns pointed at me and at US where I was questioned for two hours
but that was during the gulf war and I totally understand and
cooperated. I did not raise a big stink about how I was a big shot
in my village and my ancestors were kings etc.
You and j4x could have done little else , other than co-operating
    come on man

Sharukh Khan needs to let go of his ego, he sucks anyway ;-)
He sucks yeah .... but he handled the incident very well imo
the uproar was caused by his fans not him
and its good ....now the Indian govt will actually take up the matter with their US counterparts

so every South Asian including the prime misnister should be searched because he may be carrying a bomb ?

It is unfortunate, but you have to do it to prevent future terrorist
    attacks.
There are more professional ways to do that than arresting every Khan and Mohammed .

Anti-Asian sentiments are rising in the US ....especialy due to their fear of India and China replacing the US as world power

This is ofcourse only a belief held by a small number of people ,but these people tend to be people who most often come in contact with Asians like immigration officials

I think when Some "big" hollywood stars comes to India we should welcome them the same way as they did and not jumping crazily around them.

I can very well concur that there is racial profiling when it comes to security checks. It is very subtly done so that any such charge is not proven. When someone is separated, they also select a couple of whites with you.

But it may come as a surprise to most of you - or maybe it is my perception - Amsterdam Schipol airport is the worst - they are very racist IMHO.

I can narrate several incidents from Schipol:

    • In 2003, when I was traveling back to India (from London via AMS), my colleague was separated from the queue and grilled for 30 minutes because he had several Dubai immigration stamps on his passport.
    • Another colleague of mine, who had a similar GCC country stamp, was similarly profiled.
    • OK. I can accept the above that there could be some degree of suspicion in the eyes of those people.
    • But once I was asked at AMS:
      • "Do you have any electronic instrument?" I said, "a laptop and a mobile phone".
      • "Was this mobile phone used by anyone besides you?". I said, "Yes. My wife used it. My mother has used it. Sometimes my friends have used it."
      • "Why do you allow your personal items to be used by others?". Now, what the F is this?
    • Then finally, on yet another trip. An old couple was separated from the line. They were nearing 70. They were frisked. Their hand baggage opened. Almost paraded like criminals while others were watching from the line.
    • There are several such incidents. Unfortunately, AMS provides best connections to US from India. But I have made it a point to refuse all flights via AMS from last two years.

    ???

I have seen Pakistani people treated with lot of hassle at Indian a/p. I expect same thing happens to Indians visiting Pakistan. But I am not getting into that territory. There is a different history there.

But otherwise I am unable to understand your post.

No one has been able to break my point till now with logic & no one will. Because this is racism under another name. Much like Hitler one. Weren't Jews were against Hitler & Germany? So what did he do? He first screen them & then isolated them. This law is same. I have found a good poem on this by a budding poet wait for it.

Completely bull's crap. In the name of law, several breaches are being carried out.

    1. At AMS airport, my colleague and I were returning back to India (from UK). We were never crossing the NL immigration. We just got off a flight from LHR to AMS and about to board the AMS-BOM flight. My colleague was hassled by the airport security staff. We were returning back to our own country - not trying to enter any other country.
    2. At all times at AMS airport, we were the transit passengers. We were more profiled at AMS than even in USA or UK.
    3. The 70-year old couple - everybody could easily make out that they were first time travellers. The old man even had a walking stick (but not wheelchaired). No one in their faintest suspicions could have doubted them as security threats let alone with terrorist links. They were also returning to India. It was extremely clear that they were being "discouraged" to travel ever again.
    4. My own questionning on my mobile phone? How far relevant is that? What purpose was being served other than harassment?
