Post Unique Identity Number (UID) going to replace Mobile no

As there are more than crore mobile users are being subscribed every month, the regular 10 digit mobile number will be exhausted very soon. To sort out the issue C-DOT(Center for Development of Telematics), a research and development organisation of the telecom sector, is studying whether the Unique Identity number (UID) could be used as mobile number too.

The number of Indian mobile users have crossed the 44 crore mark. The C-DOT is also planning to come with 11-12 digit numbers, but what if this will also fall short of demand.

The UID number will be the one to be issued by the Government of India or any other like PAN number or Driving License number.

Studying the current numbering system indicates that cell phone numbers could go beyond the regular 10 digit.

It really not something which is going to be successful and its really not practical for students and other young guys/girls to keep one permanent number. It can work for professionals but not for everyone.

UID may be an alphanumeric number - in which case it will not be possible to use it as a cell phone number.

I agree. But school and colleges are going to ban mobile usage in the campus.

And also, don't you think that mobile shoul be used by responsible and authorised people?

Nope, I don't think mobile should be used by responsible and authorised people only, its an important device to stay in touch and in emergency situation you really need it. Please comment
"emergency situation comes up for responsible and authorised people only or it can happen with anyone"
Only responsible and authorised people are living/human beings, others are not
Only responsible and authorised feels pain and have authority to enjoy n avail services others don't have

In collage campus authorities can just ban mobile phone usage but in real terms they can not stop students from using mobile phone outside the campus, some students stay at home too and some students even go to markets.

    Okey. Let me explain.

Why all the teenagers are not allotted license? I know many teenagers who are skilled enough to drive motor bikes or LMV.

There are some other issues related to their ethics.

Students staying far from home, are to concentrate on their study, not to chat on phone. Hostels are having phone facility, it can be used to communicate with parents.

For Example : one of my friends teenage brother lend phone from my friend.
Phone was used by his brother's another friend for scolding a person. After few hours police came to arrest my friend(as sim was issued on his name).

We all know that how the mobile phones are being misused by many people. If the user is identified by the authority, then such cases will be lowered.

    Okey mate

Teen agers are allowed to drive from the eighteen onwards (please mind 19 is also counted in teen age)
before that eighteen there legs are not long and strong enough to handle MCYCL, LMV or HMV (Law of Average applies here)

    What are those other issues

If you have stayed in hostel then you must be knowing that sometimes you feel home sick during night time and really need someone to talk.
Phone are available in hosted but can not carry those phone to markets, outing, outstation trips and its really not good idea to buy one new phone just for outings/shopping day out.

For Example : one of my friends teenage brother lend phone from my friend.
Phone was used by his brother's another friend for scolding a person. After few hours police came to arrest my friend(as sim was issued on his name).
Even i know one guy who did something similar and his age was 45 at that time, check newspapers they are full of crime and stupid acts like this and 99% crimes are in hand with adult responsible people

Work of blade is to shave, not to cut skin but what if one day you get a cut while shaving :confused1:

When I was in college, I used to stay in hostel. My first six months were quite miserable - bad food, bedbugs, unfamiliar surroundings, dirty bathrooms and toilets, etc.

In my days there were no phones, let alone cell phones. I sometimes used to really feel home sick.

Today's generation is lucky - they can talk everyday if they wish and can afford.

My son goes to evening classes and sometimes the class ends early or delayed. He quickly texts a message to my wife and she is able to pick him up at the correct time.

I am not against banning cell phones. There could be isolated incidents of misuse. But punishing a whole fraternity for the mistakes of few will be injustice.

I have often heard that college students use cell phones on silent mode during classes. Perhaps. But if not the cell phone, they would find some other toy to play with. Afterall, in my days too, there were good students and bad students.

    ------------

But this thread is going totally offtopic.

Sorry. I mean below 18 years. Thanks..

It depends on physical development. Even I'm driving since 16 years of my age.

Yes I stayed in hostel for four years. We only came to know the importance of home while living far away. But the Home sickness was there for few months only during ragging period (30 days in my college).

It is not necessary that all adults are responsible. Many of them don't know to operate mobile phones. Not 99% crimes because the crimes done by a teenager were treated as childish act and they were minor crimes.

Also do you know why criminal activity is increasing among teenagers?
Because all of them were fascinated by their classmates luxurious gadgets, and to avail them, they did crime.(You can also see in news papers their involvment in murder, theft, kidnapping etc.)

Actually it's an Idea till date, but the researches are going on to implement it very soon.

It is possible that Government will allow to use 2 or 3 connections to the same UID.

For the moment, TRAI is toying with the idea of using level 8 for mobile numbers. So first we would have 10 digit mobile No.s beginning with 8.

Ok. Government is still still working out on the format for UID. But targeted to complete the project in coming 2 years. And the cell phone number project is to be completed by 2013, because the 10 digit number system will be exhausted with current subscription rate.
