Our dear companion, who holds the dignity of getting the most number of pats from us, is turning 40, this Tuesday.
As the scientist Douglas Engelbart of the Stanford Research Institute demonstrated a small rectangular wooden device with a single button which could control a computer, at a computer conference in San Francisco on December 9, 1968, no one thought that the little ‘mouse’ will become such an important part of a computer.
It was developed by Dr. Engelbart and his team to play the role of an ‘X-Y position indicator for a display system’ as quoted in his patent application, while the public preferred to call it ‘mouse’ ,as it looked like one.
On this special occasion, let us all express our love towards the ‘little giant’. Let us all value the mouse’s greatness for a moment. In 2004, Logitech joined with Agilent Technologies to create the first ever laser-driven mouse replacing light emitting diode (LED). Just last week, Logitech announced that it had shipped its billionth mouse since beginning operations in 1985. Microsoft has launched a wide range of mouse pointers in recent weeks which included a hybrid that is, it can be used for desktop-laptop uses, and also as a ‘Sidewinder’, which has a number of extra buttons for hardcore gamers.
As the mighty mouse turns 40, it is facing a serious threat from other rising contenders such as touch sensitive screens. Also, the use of gesture technologies is also threatening to take over the domination of mouse. As new gadgets come up, which can help us in doing things more easily, we might be saying goodbye to our dear old mouse. :crying:
As one of our best companions is turning 40, we are thinking of a replacement for our dear old mouse. Anyway, for now, a whole-hearted ‘Happy Birthday’ will do. So, let me congratulate our ‘little giant’ in advance.
Happy Birthday Dear Mouse! :happybday:
Long live mouse!
