Default Obama wants to know: Why open source?

President Barack Obama is a smart guy. Where others zig, he zags. It's perhaps not surprising, then, that he's been asking around about the benefits of open source, according to Sun Chairman Scott McNealy, who has been asked by President Obama to author a white paper on the benefits the U.S. government can derive from open source.

anyone here interesting in Open Source?

Most of the good software these days is open source/lightweight
Foxit for PDF, Open Office for Documents, Firefox for browsing....and many more.
Very soon, these software giants are going to face losses.
Look at Nero...it started off so well but with every new version, it has become bloatware & more difficult to use.

Yes, you are right. Nero is losing its place with its each new release...
But, there are still many who rely completely on paid things....

i will give a real simple example ... u must have used winamp/real player ... to play and orgamize music ... use foobar2000 music player and try to mod it according to your needs ... try to add/edit some small pieces of codes there ...

open source is the future of most softwares ... u will hardly notice such dominance by a few softwares like nero, norton, real,WINDOWS after a few years from now

Corporates are the main clientale of Commercial softwares ...... For them there is no room for errors that a free open source[usually community supported] softwares usually have . So Commercial softwares wont vanish anytime soon ......

While Open source will make it big [especially in the domestic market] Commercial softwares will not vanish ....

Wrong, its the corporates who are fastly opting for Open Source Software.
The reasons behind this is simple!

As recession increases, companies are under pressure to cut costs.
and by adopting OSS would have lower costs.

Many if you may not know,
BJP, entirely uses Free & OSS software including linux.
so mostly desktop in BJP office are Ubuntu driven

This is a delicate situation and we dont want users arguing about the advantages/disadvantages of FOSS and Windows. Because it will result in much mudslinging (as usually found in other *cough* tech *cough* forums). Gary4gar must be knowing what i am implying

    True!
We have seen people defending their fav os like they defend their children

so in this thread we should only discuss Advantages & disadvantages of OSS.
and at no point we should compare it with Windows.

So i would urge you to keep the thread clean
