US based PC manufacturer Hewlett-Packard has announced their plans to recall as many as 15,700 notebook batteries worldwide. This recall is related to a possible burn and fire hazard. This information was confirmed in a statement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The company has already received 20 reports of batteries overheating out of which at least one resulted in a minor burn injury. Two of these reports came from the United States. The affected batteries are from early January 2005 and have been used in products like HP and Compaq notebook computers.
The commission added that the affected batteries have a bar code label starting with L3. These defective products were manufactured in China and the notebooks using them were sold at retail and online stores from January 2005 through December 2005 for between $1,000 and $3,000.
Some of these batteries were also sold as accessories during the same period. Consumers who want to get their batteries verified can contact HP at 888-202-4320, or visiting the HP Battery Replacement Program Web site at
