Although the broadband speeds and availability has increased, the government has taken a hands off approach to the telecom regulation. For example in the year 2000 business companies paid around $1000 per month to get a 1.5M bps speed or known as T1 line, and for residential broadband users now its faster connection for about $50 per month.
The increase in USA shows that from the year 2000 to 2008 that number of residential broadband users increased from 5 million to a whopping 80 million.
USA needs faster broadband speeds in order for their users to use new and advanced web based features such as videos, there are even some rural areas which have no access to broadband.
Slowly but steadily the USA is catching up with the bigger countries regarding broadband which includes Japan and South Korea.
