Default Good news. You can now buy from eBay US

How often we are left frustrated that we do not get the latest (and possibly the best) in India? How often we requested our NRI relative and friends to get something for us? How dearly we wish that we could buy (online) directly from an international website and have the goods shipped to us in India?

The problem of buying from international website has been manyfold.
  • Many international websites do not ship to India because they are averse to deal with the customs and excise departments of India
  • The local courier services are not competant
  • There have been too many cases of theft and mishandling in the past
  • Each state in India has different laws - for example Octroi in MH
    --------------
    From the buyer's perspective:
  • How do you trust a website?
  • Is is possible to buy in INR?
  • What about the extra (exorbitant) charge applied by Indian banks on forex transactions?
  • When will the shipped goods reach me?
  • Will they arrive to me undamaged?
  • Can I return them and get refund if I am not satisfied?
The above are a set of non-exhaustive list of issues.

However, there is now time to rejoice. eBay is now offering Indian buyers to buy from (power) sellers from the US. The service is known as eBay Global Easy Buy (just google "ebay globaleasybuy"). We can order now from the trusted power sellers. The amounts are shown in INR and inclusive of shipping, duties and other charges. Octroi may be extra. The amount payable is in INR and thus there is no forex charge.

But the best part is that standard eBay policies such as price protection, delivery assurance, payment protection, etc. are applicable. Damages liability is limited to Rs. 50,000. But there is a catch - you cannot return the goods. Also, manufacturer warranties (*) may not hold true unless specifically mentioned.

(*) Many goods sold in a particular teritorry/country are supplied with a warranty that is applicable in that teritorry/country only. For example, a Nikon camera purchased in USA carries a warranty by Nikon USA and is applicable in USA only.

I am a very old member of ebay, and even I was happy on hearing this news but when I explored the items given by sellers I was surprised / shocked on knowing that even though you can pay in INR (Rupees) the SHIPPING charges comes to approximate 70 percent to more than 100 percent of the value of item.

So is it really worth paying around 800 bucks for a item having value 1000 bucks?? Just because it is imported, why not rather search some imported goods shoppee and try for it.
Comments welcome ;-)
