A cyber crime list, compiled recently by Symantec (firm dealing with internet security products), has India in the fifth spot. India rose to the fifth spot in the cyber crime ranking in 2009 from eleventh place in 2008. Reports show that the hackers of these days are using social netwrokign websites as one of the major weapons for web-based attacks, while earlier attacks were via e-mail. These atacks by hackers leave the victim loosing sensitive information like passwords, bank account and credit card details etc.
The cyber attackers are now majorly focsing on social networking websites, because there the users tend to trust people with whom their relations might be just days (or even hours) old. They think that there cannot be any untrustworthy guys using those sites.
India also ranks second in we-based attacks in the Asia Pacific region. As the reports said:
Mumbai ranked first in India, and had the highest number of bot infected computers (50 percent), while Delhi stood at second place with 13 percent affected computers.India saw an average of 788 bots per day in 2009. About 62,623 distinct bot-infected computers were observed in India during the period.
It also turned out to be a big year for spam. Around 107 billion of spam messages were delivered on an average all around the globe per day, out of which 85 percent came from botnets. It has been reported that around five million computers around the world are now controlled by the ten major bot networks, which start with Cutwail, Rustock and Mega-D.
