Rep Power: 12 | Research says cellphone talking while driving is as bad as drunk driving A study has claimed that people who use their cellphone while driving are as impaired to drive safely as drunk drivers. This also applies to people who use the popular ‘hands-free’ devices to talk on their cell phones. Frank Drews of University of Utah was a part of this study group and he said in a statement: “If legislators really want to address driver distraction, then they should consider outlawing cell phone use while driving.” They studied as many as 40 volunteers for this experiment. They were made to drive on a simulator four times: while undistracted, using a handheld cell phone, using a hands-free cell phone and while intoxicated to a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level. Drews added on their study results: “Driving while talking on a cell phone is as bad as or maybe worse than driving drunk.” He also referred to the statistics saying that alcohol was involved in 40 percent of the 42,000 annual U.S. traffic fatalities. |
