International Federation of Phonographic Industries has said in a statement that they are preparing to sue search engine company Yahoo’s china division for violating copyright laws in the nation. They claim that the search engine is linking to Web sites that offer pirated music.
John Kennedy of the International Federation of Phonographic Industries said in a statement: “Yahoo China have been blatantly infringing our members’ rights. We are taking the preliminary steps required by Chinese law for filing a lawsuit.”
IFPI would be claiming that the search engine service from Yahoo! links to outside sites with unlicensed MP3 downloads. The company’s Chinese operations are basically operated by local company Alibaba.com which itself is partially owned by Yahoo!
The lawsuit can be filed in the courts in the country within the next couple of weeks. Yahoo! on their part has said that their operations in the region are acting “within the law”.
