F-35 fighter named Lightning II
United States and eight other countries are jointly developing a stealthy F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and they have now officially named it as Lightning II.
This supersonic F-35 is being developed by a team led by US based Lockheed Martin Corp. and the cost of this project is estimated at $276 billion.
This makes this project the costliest ever U.S. weapons program ever.
Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England said at a ceremony on this fighter plane: “The F-35 Lightning II will be the centerpiece of airpower in the 21st century for America and our allies.”
The official name of this craft was announced by U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley at the ceremony at Lockheed’s Fort Worth, Texas plant. He added that the F-35 represented the fruit of over a hundred years of flight and aerial combat.
Ralph Heath, president of Lockheed’s aeronautics unit said: “The F-35 Lightning II will carry on the legacy of two of the greatest and most capable fighter aircraft of all time.”
