Rep Power: 10 | House of Representatives passed legislation against internet gambling in USA The American House of Representatives has passed the legislation which is aimed at cutting down on Internet gambling in the country by banning the usage of credit cards and bank transfers on these services. The bill was introduced by the republicans and it passed comfortably with a score of 317-93. It would now be sent to the US Senate and later to the White House before it becomes a law. The officials in the country also claim that betting on the net even on web services operating outside the country is illegal. And if the law is passed, any proven offense could result in a five-year prison term for violators. House Speaker Dennis Hastert spoke on this issue: “We must be wary of illegal gambling sites that offer fronts to criminals for money laundering, drug trafficking and terrorist financing. Internet-based companies must abide by US regulations that protect our children, citizens and the integrity of American business. The Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act will do just that. It seeks to protect our children from gambling sites at home, keep our hard-earned money in the bank, and put the criminals that seek to take advantage of our family earnings in jail.” House Majority Leader John Boehner added: “This bill is an important part of the American Values Agenda and I am pleased that House Republicans continue to move substantive legislation upholding strong values that puts the interests of our families and children first.” |
