CBS News going online with vintage archive clips
CBS News has announced that they are going to make available decades of archives to the public. They are going to use the services of online retailers CustomFlix and Amazon.com.
Initially, CBS would be offering full-length reports and segments from the “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes” on the internet. And in time, this would be expanded to content dating from 1950s.
They are collaborating with online stores including CustomFlix and Amazon.com for the service. Interested users would be able to put up to 10 segments or 90 minutes of video on a custom-made DVD. This DVD would be available for $24.95.
CBS News senior VP Linda Mason spoke on this decision: “Up until now it’s been closed except to researchers. This opens it up to the public. It’s a sampling now, but the variety will grow over time.”
However, CBS made it clear that they won’t be able to release certain portions of the content due to copyright limitations. They are expecting to generate usable revenues from this content, which has been developed for one time use on television.
