Rep Power: 12 | DaimlerChrysler to scrap the four-door Smart car DaimlerChrysler has reportedly said that they are planning to scrap its four-seat Smart car. This decision would mean that the company would focus their attention on the two-seat model in another overhaul of the minicar unit. This move alone could cost the company close to around 1 billion euros (690 million pounds) and 300 jobs. However, such a move would mean that DaimlerChrysler would have to negotiate with Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corp who develops the four-door model at a plant in the Netherlands. It would also require an approval from the Daimler’s supervisory board. A statement from the company said: “DaimlerChrysler AG is planning to focus on the Smart fortwo to ensure the long-term sustainability of its Smart brand. Thus, the profitability of Smart will be confirmed, with positive results expected from 2007 onward.” They are already scheduled to launch an updated version of the car sometime next year. Smart Car was originally launched in 1998 and is quite popular in congested cities in European nations. It would also be making an appearance in the upcoming Hollywood flick, The Da Vinci Code. |
