US automaker Ford has said that they are earmarking around 1 billion pounds in Britain. The company would be using these funds to develop environmentally friendly technology for its cars for the European markets.
Ford of Europe head Lewis Booth said in a statement: “Environmental motoring has to go mainstream. Ford is going green for a billion.”
They would be studying using lightweight materials, advanced diesel and petrol engines, hybrids and biofuels in their cars designed for this market.
One of the primary goals of this experiment is to ensure that Ford Focus of the future would be able to drive 70 miles on a gallon of fuel. In addition, they plan to make sure that it emits less than 100 grammes of carbon dioxide per km driven.
Ford would then deploy these improved technologies on their other brands including the Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo.
