DaimlerChrysler recalling 111,687 Jeep Grand Cherokees for safety reasons
DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler unit has recalled as many as 111,687 Jeep Grand Cherokees after they received complaints related to heated front seats resulting in fires.
The company has already received 32 reports of fires or overheating which caused as many as 15 injuries. And this has resulted in six lawsuits against the company.
The recall is for vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2004 and has been posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Web site.
Company spokesperson Max Gates said in a statement: “Because there is a potential for overheating, we hope people will bring in their vehicles for repairs. The design has already been changed to make sure the system is more robust.”
The problem is pretty big as the model Grand Cherokee was the most popular SUV in the market in those two years and a lot of models were sold in the market. Company reports show sales of 207,479 units in 2003 and 182,313 units in 2004.
The recall is expected to begin next month and would cost nothing to the owners of the affected models.
