AMD planning a microprocessor factory in New York State
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has said in a statement that they are planning to build a new microprocessor factory in New York State. This plant would be manufactured with an investment of USD 3.2 billion and would help them compete effectively with the giants in the industry Intel Corp.
AMD aims to make this plant operational by 2010 and should increase AMD’s total capacity by nearly 50 percent. New York State has offered the company $900 million worth of incentives in the form of cash, research and development subsidies and tax rebates.
This news of a new plant in NY State comes just days after AMD announced their plans to spend $2.5 billion to expand and upgrade its chip plants in Dresden, Germany. Those plans would help the company quadruple capacity between 2005 and 2008.
Preston Snuggs, AMD’s vice president of logic manufacturing operations spoke on these new initiatives: “This gives us a long-term plan in terms of manufacturing, a good road map for the future. It should supply customers with products they need in the quantities they need.”
