| Senior Member & Mod | Guys, you all have seen and quite well know this fact that i use edge internet (internet on pc or lappy by the help of gprs connected mobile through bluetooth or data cable) and i am a freak fan of this technology.. i will like more people to join this league of mine and who can discuss this with me.. here are some important suggestions for the noobs who are going to try their hands on mobile modem internet.. Guys we all know this fact that smart phones of Nokia come up with this edge facility. You can check if edge is available in your phone too by just going into nokia.co.in and finding out your mobile's model no. and the features written against it. if there is edge written, than you are able to do all the stuffs i am mentioning below...:- Nokia phones have three types of modem cables for their phones.. for ex. my nokia 3110 c phone has a DK2 cable. while my nokia 7210 supernova has a cA101 cable..yes theres a complete difference in both the cords. the first one(3110c) is a phone with small modem cache. its internal memory is just 8mbs. while that of the latter cited has a memory of 30mb. so you can clearly see how much can be the difference in their cache saving values. the modem of 3110c is a slow modem(however, i use it) on networks like that of Airtel, IDEA CELLULAR and Voda, they provide you wth this facility of gprs connectivity for your pc. there are many goods things in this service. it gives you a portable access to internet. it gives descent speed. and in India the companies are giving unlimited browsing plans to the customers (for ex. i use the 20 Rs/day) Now the question arises that how the mobile can be converted to a working modem. so you need, gprs connectivity for this. more help call your cust care. in India the cos. default the gprs for your mobile. but you need to activate the unlimited plan first as the normal plan can damage the bills. so when you have done the above. you are ready to connect the mobile-ly internet to your laptop or pc. just open your pc. connect your mobile via cable or bluetooth to the pc. for doing this. you will need the nokia pc suite which is available both in market as well as in their site. the cable can be purchased. a real one worths around 200-300/- Rs. but i use the common data cable which can be used in common devices like the mp3 players etc.. just you need to see that the cable is fitting into your mobile's usb port. when you have checked this. connect your phone using the nokia pc suite. you will see that the data cable driver is being installed onto your comp. you will also see that how the driver modem is issued onto the comp as well.. now when you are connected on by nokia pc suite, you got two choices to connect on internet. 1st with the help of nokia suite itself. and the 2nd by making a dialup connection for the same. now when you are in making the choice of a dialup or the nokia i want to tell you about something. the nokia suite makes the internet slow, as the application is not able to cache more memory in its log for a long time. so when you are doing the internet for a too long time, say 5-6 hours . the connection will automatically get disc. while if you make a direct dial up connection this problem doesnt persist. as for me, i use direct dial up for connection on edge. i have a idea prepaid unlimited subscription.. to make a dial up connection. i plug my usb cable to the pc. go to netwok centre. (or just click connect to internet option) and click on Nokia 3100 c modem connection. the dial up number is *99# for Idea and no authentification is required. now when you are connected on the net, the things dont end up here. you have to take a lot of care for the phone. like for example i presetly use the internet by bluetooth connection. first you need to understand the working of bluetooth, bluetooth is encrypted and highly compressed programed comversion of your data. thus a file,.say mp3 is transmitted by the help of bluetooth makes the phone busier and wam. why ??because the algorythm for bluetooth is too complicated. mobile phones of now, have good OS but when you are continuosly doing a stuff like internet browsing from a mobile(which includes kilobytes of data transmission/millisec) you need to be aware of the fact that, 'MOBILES ARE SMART BUT NOT PCs" So even if you are connected by a bluetooth or a cable connection you need to be causious and alert. i usually prefer using the mobile edge internet by help of bluetooth with the pc. because it has no hardware involvement. while when i use cable for the same cause, the usb port will get hot immedietly. my net sessions last for upto 10 hours each day.. on cable chances are there that my mobile's internal modem will heat up too. the cables are having the metallic jacks, same for the mobile's usb jack. so they can heat up gradually and give problems in future working of the mobile.. so i use bluetooth. but than the same heating problem is there. first of all the phone's battery gets heated up. cause hours on internet is same as hours of calling. so I TAKE OUT THE PHONE'S BACK (BATTERY) COVER , SO THAT THE EXCESS HEAT WILL GO INTO AIR AND NOT RETAIN INSIDE i keep the phone on its screen facing down towards the object i have putten it. than i do some more things to let the mobile work easily. i KEEP ON CHARGING, SO THAT THE BATTERY DOESNT GET TRIMMED BY ITSELF, SO ITS A DIRECT CURRENT GOING ON DC. i keep the phone almost 3 feets away from the pc/laptop. so that the pcs cpu frequency doesnt interfere with the mobile's.( yes it does affect too) now when i have done alot of spamming on the IBF, and hours of other downloading stuff. the phone is compltely exhausted. so the next thing is to give a break. just take out the cord(if you are on cable) or put the bluetooth off. leave the phone ideal for some minutes, say 10 mins. with its bluetooth off,. now switch off the phone. take off the battery from it and after it take of the sim card too. because everything there is heated up. you must also take off the memory card so that it doesnt get truncated. now when everything is off phone,. let it cool down. after 15-20 mins. put the things inside again and switch the phone on. meanwhile, after 10-15 days of continously doing internet by the help of mobile through this way, emptying of cache is must. how to do this? switch off the phone. take out its memory card, and switch it on. now go into settings and reset factory settings. you will return to default settings into your phone. now after 5 minutes. switch it off again and now this time put the memory card in it. switch on, resetting again. switch on again and you are done... these are some ways to make a HAPPY EDGE SURFING experience.. hope you like this...screenshot will be posted soon.. | dear user, thanks for guidance of people. i want to add some points here, first of all ur advice on use of blutooth instead of data cable is wrong, because when u use bluetooth u will not get total speed of ur network provider, because in data cable u r recieving whole amount of data due to pin to pin connection. for example in wireless techology u know the speed of net is already slow only due to wireless system as compare to optic fiber cable connection. so always try to use data cable. i am using nokia edge phone from many years just for internet on PC with damage LCD and battry problem. i continuse used this phone for upto 4 - 5 days and my PC timer shows that PC is on from 4 days and 13 Hrs and 20 Minutes i never perform any cache cleaning where as internel memeory of my phone is 10 MB and always charging connected. i downloaded on this phone 10 GB during current month this is only counter of free download manager other website surfing dont know. i recieve same speed on 5th day as compared to 1st day, it depends on the network providers and the source server from where u r downloading the item. from my experance it is highly highly recommended that always use ur edge phone for wirelss conectivity instead of purchasing seprate USB modem which coset 6 to 8 thousnad here. try to find any old model like 6280,6288,7370,6111 etc which are available used in 2500 to 3000 (u will get in this amount a modem+camera+blutooth+memorycard+fm+a phone on which u can also talk) and in USB u will only get sending sms. so kindly if u need any further assistance, u can contect on sunny92088@yahoo.com Best Regards Sunny92088 |

| Hi, Thank you guys for your valuable feedback. I would like to ask bit few more questions. I am planning to have internet connection. I would it cheap to use internet from a normal GSM phone rather than buying a new data card from tata or RIM. however, my mobile does not support that at all and I am planning to buy a new mobile. Would you please suggest what criteria (technical like internal RAM, EDGE 10/12 GPRS data rate etc) should I keep in consideration while buying the mobile. As I just want to use the phone as modem, hence I would prefer it to be cheapest possible with all neccesary modem features. Appreciate your comments |
