I have used Open Office a little and I liked it's smooth interface, layout and features way better than M. S. Office.

Is it possible to edit Word, Excel, Powerpoint documents in Open Office ?

You can open M. S. Office documents in Open Office, copy the contents and create a new Open Office document. But is it possible edit the M. S. Office document in Open Office. When I tried this, the document opened in read only mode. I could read or copy text, but wasn't able to make changes to the document and save it.

I am able to. It might be just that the file don't have write permission. Check that.

You should get this when you save it:

You are right it's working without any problem now. And the "Export to PDF" feature has more options than any other freeware word to PDF converter.

Good Bye, M. S. Office.

Tip -Saving powerpoint presentations using OO Impress's .swf format allows it to run a slideshow like an exe file in any computer with flash plugin installed ,regardless of the OS . In contrast MS's .pps format runs only in windows OS with MS office installed !

Is there anyway to disable the OpenOffice splash screen ?

Update: I found the solution.

Open the "soffice.ini" file in OpenOffice program directory and change "Logo=1" to "Logo=0".

Tutorials For OpenOffice - Free help for anyone using or teaching OpenOffice, Home Page

To do in linux you have to found out: sofficerc & do what Archer had written.
