Internally also I don't have much information. It depends upon Mahindra, what their policy is, if they are going to lay off people, then no bench nothing, they will start from the higher paid catagory. And another factor is, if they are going to keep Satyam policies or they are going to enforce their own policies.

hmmm.. I read somewhere that Marketing people of Satyam are more vulnerable than tech guys... As Mahindra already possess good marketing people... Whatever, hope this recession ends soon...

Sorry for the delay, I had a hard time downloading this opensol copy, everytime the connection disconnects the download would show an HTTP error, had to search the FTPs to download.
    Here are the facts :

    1. opensol 11 comes with a GNOME desktop with compiz 0.7.6 (no problem enabling 3d desktop)
    2. very good 3d desktop experience, the features include the rotating cursor pointer, gears in side cube
    3. an average genome desktop
    Cons:

    1. the software lags as because not enough data is transferred to RAM on access, it accesses the CD when you click on something, so PC may not respond in timely manner irrespective of your system capability
    2. No shutdown or restart button , not inside the desktop, not even on the logon screen once you enable compiz, sometimes even without enabling compiz shutdown button vanishes, if you find one tell me
    3. Reboot and halt commands do not work due to less privileged account (I had to do a hard reset)
    4. sometimes some icons on desktop go missing if you try to play with the resolution settings
    5. and desktop looks like crap.
    6. 3 major drivers missing for me,

    • SATA RAID-none of my HDDs were discovered, same as the old solaris copy
    • Marvel LAN driver missing(no networking)
    • Pinnacle media center TV card was not recognized
Overall , I did not expect this from Sun.

    Below are the screen shots,

The direct screen shots in linux are png images and are very large in size.
It is adviced to post pictures in jpg or gif format before posting to reduce the size .

Default The reason for windows popularity

The only reason why windows has a market share is not beacause every end user has it. but bcoz microsoft has deals with companies that they will ship only windows with their hardware and as a result the world got win32-sick. otherwise microsoft would have vanished years ago with the amount of pirated windows os

^^^ Even otherwise windows would ruled coz most of people were computer illiterate. And frankly many of them would still be happy to just double click n run their programs instead of having to compile it first... the user friendliness or dumb-friendliness was a major factor too...

Its the reason why, still people buy PC's with windows and not Free-dos or Red-hat option...

oh let me guess then. how many times do "you" require to compile it in Ubuntu. Installing it is same, its even better than windows open the software manager>search for your program>click install and thats it.

You didn't understand the context, in which I meant that, do you ? MS was already a leading software company when linux(not unix) was a mere baby around 15-20 yrs back. People were already satisfied with M$ s/w.

And when M$ introduced GUI, it was a big hit, even thought it was apple/mac which first introduced GUI.

And once people get used to things which are easy/no-brainer, they kinda get addicted to it. Case in point MSIE/WMP , which are a part of normal windows. It takes time for people to change their habits.and some are merely lazy to break out of the shell (no pun intended).

And at that time, linux was in no way a competitor for windows. IMO linux didn't make much of an impact with desktop users untill after 2k.

In the end, its really not a question of which is better(which btw is obvious), its merely what people chose to do. Its needless to say M$ has an agressive markwting, as it can be seen from various law suits against it.

It is time to add Windows 7 to the poll. Most of our active member have either tried or using Windows 7.
