A broadband line has a contention ratio of typically 1:50 (that is 50 users share an 8 mbps pipe). Because of 'A' part of the ADSL technology, it is possible to give a minimum promise of 256 kbps and a speed up to 1 mbps or 2 mbps per shared line.

In case of the leased line, the end customer is the sole user of the line. Also download and upload speeds are the same (which is not so in case of BB where upload speed is typically 1/4th of download speed in higher speed connections).

There is also a concept of shared leased line where 2, 4 or 8 users share a leased circuit.

In case of 512 kbps 1:2 leased line, you should expect a 512 kbps speed (download and upload).

That's not entirely correct. The "A" in ADSL stands for asynchronous, which basically means "faster down than up". The contention ratio (1:50) is actually just that you must have 1 unit of bandwidth for every 50 users (eg 50 256kbps users would share 256kbps of bandwidth from the ISP to the outside world, whether this is through peering or international lines, such as those provided by FLAG, SMW3, SMW4, i2i etc).

The line between you and the ISP (or, at least the nearest DSLAM or telephone exchange) is not technically shared, in that it uses a high-frequency digital signal over the same copper wiring that your telephone line uses.

A leased line usually means that you have 2 things:
    1. A guaranteed allocation of bandwidth, available at all times and
    2. A service level agreement, usually following the "five 9s" rule, or 99.999% uptime, which means about ~45 minutes per year downtime maximum.

A leased line also comes at a price by comparison to standard delivery, so it's more common for medium-large enterprises to have a leased line where consumer-level connections are not adequate. It is USUALLY (but not always) synchronous.

In addition, not all broadband is 4:1 down/up - an 8mbits ADSL connection may only have a maximum of 1mbps upload, sometimes less - depends on the ISP. Only ADSL2+M allows for up to 24mbits down, with up to 3.5mbits up.

Actually, 1:2 would be 512 down/256 up, but more commonly a leased line would be 1:1.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leased_line and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL for more detailed info.

Lease Line is dedicated line for internet. It is served only for the specific user. There is pure committed speed and upload download speed is also same. It is not a shred line. And the broadband is served to multiple user. The speed problem occurs. Download speed is also 1:8 of committed speed. In the peek time speed goes really down.
