34 Million Handsets Sold In Russia FY05, Climb Of 20%
Strength was once more restored to the Russian handset market in 2005. Whereas development lost momentum and slackened, in contrast to 2004, consignments climbed up by 20% to reach above 34 Mn units.
Over 97% of handsets sold had the popular GSM technology. Replacement purchases and dedicated marketing of the middle and higher end models boosted the GSM consignment rates by nearly 23% to touch the $ 5.3 Bn mark.
On the handset manufacturer’s front, Nokia climbed up from the fourth to the first position, superceding Motorola which slid down to the third position, offering Samsung the opportunity to maintain the second position. BenQ-Siemens was at the fourth position while Sony Ericsson retained the fifth place.
According to the recent market research report by RNCOS titled “Russian Mobile Market - An Industry Insight (2006)”, these five vendors are estimated to comprised above 83% of the consignment amount in 2005.
The debut models continue to be in the lead in metros and regional states. The growing accessibility of consumer loans and replacement purchases are changing the interest from the mid-segment models in the market to the upscale models, particularly in Moscow.
The report by RNCOS offers comprehensive study of the emergent Russian mobile handset sector, their expertise, innovations and influence on the industry.
Experts at RNCOS think that the industry is swiftly approaching a slow down because of the shrinking subscriber base, owing to near complete penetration.

· Geographical distribution of the mobile industry
· Prospects and setbacks faced by the mobile handset industry
· Effect of the government strategies and restructuring on the mobile industry in Russia
