Rep Power: 12 | SingTel Signs Consilient to Bring Mobile Push Email to Mass Consumer Market New SingTel MobileMail™ Targeted at 1.2 Million Subscribers SINGAPORE – 20 June, 2006 (CommunicAsia) – Consilient today announced that Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), Asia’s leading communications group, has selected the Consilient Push™ email solution to bring mobile push email to more than 1.2 million subscribers. The product, called SingTel MobileMail, will be formally launched in July, 2006. SingTel’s agreement with Consilient marks the Asian debut of a consumer mobile email product that is based entirely on open standards, a key differentiator for SingTel in choosing Consilient. Open standards refer to the underlying architecture of SingTel’s mobile email solution which makes it highly interoperable with multiple phones and email systems and capable of scaling to millions of users. Consilient is a co-author of the new standard used in SingTel’s product, which was designed specifically for mobile email. The standard is known as Push-IMAP (P-IMAP) but will be changed to Mobile EMail Enabler or MEM when it becomes a formal standard at the end of 2006. Consilient co-authored MEM with Sony Ericsson, China Mobile, LG Electronics and other industry leaders. The use of open standards was a key requirement for SingTel in order to deploy a low cost mobile email solution that could scale to high user numbers. Mr. Hui Weng Cheong, Vice President of Consumer Products, SingTel said, “As a customer-focused service provider, SingTel is pleased to deliver low-cost push email to our customers on their mobile phones to meet their diverse lifestyle needs. With MobileMail, our customers can cost-effectively access email on-the-go with their handsets. We selected Consilient’s open standards P-IMAP system to provide this service as this solution offers scalability and interoperability that helps us better serve our customers.” “SingTel’s mobile email for consumers marks an industry shift toward making mobile email affordable for everyone from CEOs to students,” said Trevor Adey, Consilient CEO. “Open standards-based solutions like Consilient Push hold the key to putting low cost mobile email in the hands of consumers on the phones they use. It also gives operators a simplified offering for mobile email that can scale to hundreds of thousands of users and integrate with their existing operating and messaging systems,” Adey added. SingTel’s low cost mobile email offering is targeted at the consumer market and small to mid size businesses that require affordable wireless email. The first phase of the deployment will provide SingTel’s subscribers with mobile access to their Yahoo! and SingNet accounts, in addition to SingTel’s hosted email service for small to mid-size businesses called BizWeb Solutions (BWS). SingTel will begin offering MobileMail on Nokia handsets, followed by Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Windows Mobile and Panasonic. SingTel’s MobileMail solution is designed to be easy to use for consumers – a key requirement for SingTel. Once subscribers are registered for the mobile email service, using over-the-air deployment, they need only enter their password to activate their mobile email accounts. About Consilient Push™ The Consilient Push solution is client-server software for wireless email on mobile phones and wireless devices. The server is designed for heavy user load and supports thousands of users connecting via multiple wireless devices and phones. Consilient’s Java-based server and clients support low-end mobile phones and can be deployed on Linux, UNIX, and Windows operating systems. Consilient Push supports multiple languages including English, Spanish, simplified and traditional Chinese, German, French and Japanese. Features: Scales to thousands of users Real push email, no need to “poll” for email Supports Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung LG, Sanyo and Windows Mobile handsets Runs on Linux, UNIX and Windows operating systems Uses open P-IMAP standard (also known as MEM) Extends multiple email platforms from a single server Does not include or require a Network Operations Center End-to-end security - 128 bit SSL encryption Easy to install with over-the-air (OTA) deployment of email clients About Open Standards: P-IMAP (or Mobile EMail Enabler, MEM) Mobile industry leaders are progressing toward the global standardization of a new standard for mobile email called Push-IMAP (P-IMAP). The standard was designed specifically for mobile email by Consilient, Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics and China Mobile and enables operators to deploy low cost mobile email to the consumer market. The standard will be called MEM once formalized at the end of 2006. Traditionally, wireless email products have used closed architectures that require a network operating center that locks operators and enterprises into limited device support and email platform connectivity. An open standards solution can deliver lower cost email and greater interoperability for an overall more flexible mobile email solution.
