Hi all
today i was just checking this railwire broadband and found under price plan its wirtten

*Port speeds are on 1:4 contention ratio

which simply means that you will be sharing this line with for other people in your area so that means if you 64kbps speed on 256 kbps connection then also you can not complain about it coz it is written on price plan screen.

This railwire is available in whitefield, Banglore only

Adsl connections has an even worse contention ration so there is nothing bad about railwire.

Correct. I heard BSNL just increased it to 1:50. Crap.
What do they mean by doing it? Have they gone mad ??

but with how much Bwidth ?

I really don't know anything in such detail about BSNL. I don't use it..

^^ I think i can understand what he says.. He just wants to know what is the bandwidth this contention ratio is for.. For example if there are 50 256Kbps users on a 12mb line then it should be fine. But if the port is not that fast then it may be a problem

how much total bandwidth will be divided in the ratio ?

like 1:4 where 1=256 kbps

so in 1:50 , how much is 1=???

1=the connection you have applied for. it doesnt actually mean that 50 people share one connection. it means that say if there are 5000 people with 256kbps connection then 100* 256k b/w will be shared among those 5000 people.

Please can u explain this? Where did this 100 come from? I am speaking about the 100*256 listed in the post.

AFAIK, each DSL line has its own dedicated bandwidth. nothing is shared.

In cable connection, Bandwidth is shared among subcribers.


Corrent me if i am wrong

True. The local exchange is connected to the national internet backbone. The connection between the local exchange and this backbone is usually kept in the contention ratio. It means if a service provider claims to use 50:1 as contention ratio, it represents the contention which exists between the exchange and the backbone. I guy-es as per this post you are discussing about meaning less subject nothing like that the connection is bing shared among number of persons. for retail business broadband the ratio is 1:4 it means that the download speed what you get is as per your plan or 80% of that speed and this :4 means that your upload speed is 1 forth of the download speed. for example if you have 1 Mbps connection speed so as per plan your get 1024 kbps but you get some were around 750 to 890 kbps but your upload speed is only 256 kbps or low or +-5%. and for lease line the ratio is 1:1 so download and upload speed is same or in some cases upload speed is higher then your download speed.

You can get the same information from your service provider or you can ask any expert in Internet services policys. As i have already worked with Global Crossing in their retail business unit in US they have this same policy for their customer also and for lease line it is 1:1

This is an DSL technology, this is deferent but i am talking about Wireless connectivity. and even in DSL also upto some extend this technology is applicable. there is nothing like that rail wire is providing 2 to 32 mbps have some one checked the connectivity to US like download some big fine from Microsoft website like their service packs which are having more then 300 MB in size. and then check.

The speeds are mentioned in their plans are the speed of the port and actual speed is vary from the original. the speed what they give is calculated from their distribution node in your are or their main node in other words (NOC) network operation center.

So guyes don't excited the speed is same but you can only feel little difference. becasue in india all ISP are peering the bandwidth with NIC (National internet exchange) for damastic traffic routing.

First get connection then feel the speed and your experience.

Well this thread pertains to Railwire which does not provide wireless connectivity as of this day.
