Smile Help needed to connect 2 PC

    Hi All.
I need to connect a vista os laptop and a xp desktop. Can it be done using a lan card on the desktop and making the desktop a server . Till now i am not able to connect both PC even for data transfer as Vista settings are little bit complicated . Can someone please suggest me the cheapest option for connecting the two PC for sharing the net . I am using Reliance 300kpbs plan. They have given me a adsl modem.
    Thanks in advance

Does the ADSL modem feature any extra ports? If so u can use the extra ports to connect the other PCs and share the internet on them.

Can the reliance connection be configured using pppoe mode? I mean to ask can we set the modem to dial and establish the connection automatically. In broadnet, we need to login using the browser.

Alternatively u can also checkout How to share ADSL broadband provided for single computer ( eg. Reliance broadband Pune) | Tech,Fun,This n That at www.Hem.com.np

This is a wild guess, but i think it must be. Since it is running on Vista it must be a new lappie with all the usual frills !!

    There are two options
1> if u can convert to PPPoE mode for the modem, i.e. userID & passwd in modem with always on mode
get a ethernet hub and two extra ethernet cables.
connect the modem to the hub
connect the PC and the laptop to separate ports in the hub

2> if PPPoE mmode is not possible
Get a USB wifi dongle for your PC
Connect your PC to the net as u normally do
create an ad-hoc wifi network between your PC & Laptop with the option share the net connection

the ad-hoc network would also support file sharing
make sure your vista firewall is properly configured

If he is on Reliance Broadnet, then the second option will only work. In Broadnet we need to first openup Reliance Communications. and then enter our credentials in the website to get connected. Everything is controlled through the portal.

Any ideas how much a wifi-usb dongle costs?

I think i will go ahead with the LAN card as mentioned in the 5th post link. First i have to buy lan card , then let's see if that worked out for me .
    Thanks for all the replies

even if the modem doesnt features extra ports - it may feature a usb port ... u can use the usb port to connect one pc and the lan port to connect the other ... if usb is also not there ... then you should go for a switch/hub ...

Reliance broadnet cannot be configured in normal pppoe mode. They username and password need to be entered on Reliance Communications. .

I'm not sure that making an ad hoc network will work. As far as I know, to use internet sharing in windows required you to maintain a static ip address. To cut a long story short, I've never been able to use my internet connection sharing with any internet connection that works through my ethernet port. >_<

Maybe u have to try BSNL/Airtel Broadband. U will be able to share your internet connection to multiple PCs after configuring the modem to work in pppoe mode.

You can use one extra Lancard at ur desktop to connect it with ur Laptop by cable in client/server setup...

Keep the IP address of ur desktop(LAN) as 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask as 255.255.255.0.. Set IP address of ur Laptop as 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask as 255.255.255.0... Leave other fields empty on both...

Windows XP's default workgroup is WORKGROUP... Whereas Vista's default workgroup is HOME... Change workgroup names of both system to same name of your choice...

Now go in folder options... Click on view... And uncheck Use simple file sharing(if its checked)!

U should be able to share & transfer ur files now...

Now for internet sharing... download CC Proxy Download - Windows Proxy Server Download - Free Proxy Server Download Center and install it at ur desktop which will act as server...

Now configure browser on your Laptop by going in the options and there in setting the connection settings to use proxy... Put the proxy IP address as 192.168.0.1 and port as 808... Use these settings on the messengers, antivirus and other applications which will be using internet from Laptop(client)...

    Any problems... Please shout here!

Thanks a lot . It's working for now atleast

I have used CC proxy for connecting and it's working fine . I suggest you go
by LAN card method only . It's cheap and reliable as well
