    Default 2MBPS is not 2MBPS?

    Color me confused! I have the Reliance Data Transfer Plan of 2M in Jaipur (4 Gig limit, not much torrent activity). I am not seeing more than 160K in my downloads. What is the typical Reliance contention ratio being used?

    WTF is the point of even advertising 2Meg? Just call it 160! How can they get away with this when the download speed is NOWHERE near 2 Megs.

    Ridiculous!

    dude remember one thing isp advertise their speeds in MbPS (Mega Bits) to make values look more bigger and attractive 8bits=1byte so if u divide ur plan speed by 8 u will get actual download speed in ur 2MbPS plan u will get rate of 2048MEGA BITS divided by 8 bits===256KILO BYTES per second

    and if u need 2MBPS download rate u need to have 16MbPS speed connection!!!

    1024 Bits X 16 = 16384 MbPS /8=2048 Bytes i.e 2MBPS

    b=bits

    B=Bytes

    hope this clears ur doubt

    Like jatinder said, all data communication speed is measured in bits per second, while bytes is generaly used to measure data storage space. When downloading anything the speed is shown in bytes per second.

    so 8 bits = 1 byte

    Is this something only in India? I can't believe I overlooked something so minor nline2long: I've been running ISPs for 3 years. lol. Just didn't make the connection between the m and M and k and K.

    In the US and Middle East, when we sold 2m/M we MEANT 2 megaBYTES.

    This is crazy. First the division by 8, then the division by contention ratio.

    Unless I'm completely wrong and even in the US they use the same system.

    No. This practice is not just in India. All over the world, the internet speed is mentioned in kilobits and megabits only. Go to any website of an ISP and check for yourself.

    Contention ratio is also standard all over the world - it may be less or more - depending upon the infrastructure. Internet bandwidth is not something that comes cheap. So the rich corporations are able to buy more bandwidth and distribute it with less contention ratio.

    Thanks Guys. It's fairly obvious by now that I was on the Sales/Marketing/Management side eh?

    I've done some speedtest results ...

    I'm getting an average of 4000kbps download and 3000kbps (small b) upload.

    This is 4000/8 = 500kB download and 3000/8 = 375kB upload (big B)

    Since I should technically be getting 256kB down, I'm actually getting better than advertised unless I've mixed up the numbers.

    I'm not sure it makes sense for me to get this plan. My starter plan 75k was getting downloads of 700kbps = 87.5kBps. I'm not getting the full benefit of 75kb vs 2mb

    Am I making sense so far?
