Default Connect wireless router to Reliance broadband

    Hi,

I would like to set up a wireless router with reliance broadband, anyone have any idea if it will work in India?

I live in London, and not really sure how Reliance wireless works as their website plans have left me a bit confused. I will be going to India soon and will need wireless internet, however, my folks already have Reliance unlimited broadband plan. Does anyone know if Reliance can provide a wireless router that I can use with Reliance broadband (if at all this process will work)? If Reliance can't provide wireless routers, are there other wireless routers are easily available in India? Or am I better of buying a router from the UK and then set it up once I get there?

Thanks a lot for any help!! Much appreciated!

Please see this guide by @glass.
http://www.indiabroadband.net/relian...tml#post303764 (Reliance Wired Broadband - Wifi with ADSL modem+router guide)
    2.
Wifi may work with a reliance landline based broadband service. (I have not tried and also not a reliance BB user )
    Feedback awaited.
    .
    3.
. Seems they supply only an adsl modem with single LAN port.
    4.
You will need a 3-in unit viz adslmodem+4lanport+ wifi router.
Netgear/Linksy's /D'link/Buffalo/Belkin etc models available in India.
compare price equivalent model in India and U.K
    Example:http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=567
    5.
Please mention the modem presently in use in your house at Delhi.
for other Reliance Landline based broadband users to respond.

Thanks essbebe, I have got the following details from my folks in Calcutta:

    ADSL Modem: UT300R2

    Port Speed : 1024kbps
    LAN: WICF 1499
    LAN Desc: BIA

I have tried contacting Reliance and they say they can't provide a wireless router. My mother will call them and ask what other routers will be compatible. Since I'm not there yet, I don't know the exact details of the modem being used.

I had a quick look on amazon and there are a lot of different ones available.

    1.settings for Ut300r2
    Please see this link.
    ut300r2
    2.
    This procedure not needed
(given. for info. to access working modem)
    (a)
You can ask your parent to check the IP here.
    whatismyip.com
    (b)
Inform you the same ( and also remain on line )
    (c)
Then you type the same in your browser.

    (d)
It is expected a window will open to access the modem.
Almost all setting are "AUTO" only note: link vpi/vci 0 and 35
    ( and "bridged")
    Para two:
    3.
    (A)
As it is , in the new 3-in one except selecting "MER"
instead of "bridged" mode all other settings
as shown in the guide. which you can make in the
    unit you buy..
(B)Almost all setting are "AUTO" only link vpi/vci 0 and 35
No change in using the dialer to log Reliance Broadband..
    3.
As informed earlier, still feedback awaited from other users
    whether WIFI access is successful.

    1.
UT300r2 NO changes keep as standby.
Your Ut300r2 cannot be used with a WIFI router. for Reliance
    as per post by @glass.
    2.
You need a "3-in one unit" as explained earlier.
    3.
    Important step:
Which ever "3-in-one unit" you buy you have to
enter/select in WAN page line 0_35
    select "MER"and
    enter vpi/vci values 0 and 35 in next.page

Usually you will get an installation cd/usermanual/
and an automatic set up(wizard) option.

Select rest of settings as given in guide. Mostly auto.

    Para two:
If your parents are already using a "dialer"in computer window where they enter Reliance given USERID and PW to connect, the new unit should also function, at least in lan mode to existing computer (desktop).

When a laptop is connected also it should work in wifi.

    Para three.

    Please read thread from start.
I have no Reliance connection and has not tried wifi mode
with landline based Reliance Broadband connection. modem)
    ( I am in U.S now )
See the screen shots in wa3002-g4 link given below. for guidance

Ok, thanks, so I need a different device to replace the current modem and also a wireless router. I will try looking up the device you have mentioned to replace the modem and revert back with any problems. Thanks a lot!

Reliance staff say that they donot provide wireless router service, and they are not even aware that this can be done! Is this really possible? Sounds strange!

    So I have found this:

D-Link - DKT-710 Wireless G ADSL2 Starter Kit - Wireless router 4-port switch - DSL - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, 802.11b, 802.11g - external (check it out on amazon uk website, this forum does not allow me to post urls yet!)

Is this the only thing I will need to buy or do I have to buy anything else with it to make the wifi work with reliance broadband?

Thanks a lot for all the info and help so far!! Really appreciate it!

Belkin N Wireless Router with Simple Security Set Up & High-speed Internet Connection 300 Mbps (F5D8236uk4) from amazon.co.uk

This seems like a good one?

Do I really need a 4 port lan?

Ok, so now I finally get it, I just need to replace the adsl modem box that reliance has provided with a modem+wifi router, and then it should all work? I'm guessing speed won't matter if its higher, as reliance broadband is 1mbps. So getting a router with high speed won't really make much difference right?

Thanks a lot for all your help essbebe!!!!!

Better to buy a 108 Mbps B/G/N model with dual antenna
for better reception in WIFI mode, (
( say a radius of approx 30 feetor more(*[*conditions apply!)

Usual 54 Mbps models are also OK.
Please give feedback , when wifi works.

Major credit goes to @glass for the critical suggestions.

First, make sure what type of Reliance broadband you have. Reliance provides it via wired (telephone) line, wired ethernet cable, wimax and wireless dongle in so far as I know.

Assuming it is wired broadband via telephone cable, you have two options for wifi.

    (1) Get an ADSL modem+router and replace the non-wifi router Reliance would have put in at your premises, or
    (2) Get a Broadband router to connect after the non-wifi router that Reliance has put in for you. This most likely already has 4 LAN ports, but no wifi.

Reliance does not provide wifi routers to home users, the last I checked (silly though).

You can choose ANY brand of modem/router for either option above, cheaper the better. You can even try to get a wifi ADSL modem+router from another provider (BSNL/Airtel etc.), because that sometimes works cheaper than market. I think right now, it is enough to have a cheaper G series than N series. If you manage a router which has mac cloning feature, it is all the more better.

More details are on the thread essbebe has pointed to.

Thanks a lot Glass! I think the current wired broadband is via telephone cable, so I'll just get a adsl modem+router. Thanks a lot for all the tips, really appreciate it!!

Reliance staff has just emailed me to say that the broadband is wireline connection with Reliance Fix line Phone and Internet Service. So it is via telephone cable. How do I find out if I need ADSL modem + wifi router or ADSL2 modem + wifi router? I think the modem says ADSL, but I'm not sure if this could be ADSL2

Most if not all "ADSL" modems/routers today are adsl2. ADSL2 supports ADSL.

Okay, so I used Netgear ADSL2 Modem + wifi router and it works perfectly with the Reliance wireline broadband. For those wishing to use this and haven't tried it with Reliance broadband, it works, thumbs up!

I just needed to log onto Netgear configuration page and click on automatically configure ISP and it was all set, did need to do it twice as it didn't quite work the first time, and then I tried to do it manually but couldn't get the DNS server address from Reliance so tried auto config again and it worked!
