    Default ping..

Hello everyone .. I am a newbie here . I want help please ..Currently I have an airtel connection at 512 kbps at Rs 649 per month . I like playing online games for which i require low pings . I can successfully play with Asians getting 40-50 ms ping with Indians and 125-150 ms ping with people of Indonesia , Vietnam , China , Malaysia etc. But I face problems when it comes to playing European players , I have high ping with them like 250-300 ms and sometimes even more ...I mean the game is not unplayable but its not great . So I decided to do something .. I have the following options :

    1. Get a new ISP ..read about reliance broadband ..plz let me know if it can give better ping .

    2. Upgrade the speed of my airtel connection to 4 mbps at Rs 1400 i think . But i read somewhere that speed has got to do nothing with ping .. Please clear .

    3. As i m getting a new laptop soon (Dell ,i3 , 4 gb) , so should i buy wireless net like tata photon pplus or reliance net connect , wimax etc. or should i configure wi-fi on my laptop with my wired broadband on my PC (which doesnt have such a gud config . it has 1 gb RAM , 2.66 GHz , pentium 4) ..

Also temme is it possible for me to have 2 internet connections in my PC and configure wi-fi in my laptop for both of them ..

Please guide me I am very coonfused and have very lesss knowledge about these things since I am only 14. Please guide me so as I can have a ping of about 200 ms with european players .210-220 will also do.. Thanx in advance

Games lags due to uploading speed. For lag free games,it is better to go for good uploading speed.

    Check your speed here.
    airtel connection at 512 kbps
    1.
My Broadband Speed - Broadband Speed Tester
    2
or at speedtest.net also ping test.
    post the results.
    Para two:
    2.
should i configure wi-fi on my laptop with my wired broadband on my PC
YES. You need a wifi router extra.
    3.
You can try 1 Mbps speed plan from Airtel.
In wifi mode (for adsl type connection ) speed/ping will vary.

    4
....have 2 internet connections in my PC and configure wi-fi in my laptop
Only one wifi connection will work. speeds will not add up.

i think you getting are best ping from airtel....bcoz your jitter 1-2 ms....
Onething you can do,get your line checked by airtel technicians....
Ping depends upon many things such as the distance of server, load on server etc......

On increasing the bandwidth there will be change in ping.......dont have clear idea.......But i think no.Ping doesnt depend upon speed....

ya on increasing upload speed,Game lags very less.Bcoz your character in game responds quickly as compared with low upload speed.....

Try some 1 mbps plan of airtel........bcoz i think airtel is best for gaming and online streaming........

Let me clear some misconceptions here. Firstly, latency (or ping) is unrelated to your speed for the most part, getting a good upload speed helps but it's not an active factor in deciding your latency.

For low latency, you need good routing. The sub 300 pings to Europe are standard affair for Reliance, if you want lower EU pings, you need to change to an ISP that has better routing for Europe -- that being TATA. TATA pings about <150 to most EU servers, I have not used it personally, I'm going by the experience of couple of fellow players.

The sad thing is, with Reliance having their dedicated Internet backbone and gateway, they can realistically provide direct links to EU and lower the hops to provide good latency, but that would actually require effort and professionalism.

Unfortunately for you and every other Indian gamer, the ISPs here have lump-of-**** routing.....to everywhere. People in South are comparatively lucky because they manage to get <100 to Singapore/MY servers, aside from that, good luck getting playable pings to far away servers, it just won't happen.

I used to get <180 ping to IPGN (AU) servers, now it gives me about 400. I've contacted Reliance numerous times regarding routing, but it's a lost cause as their Customer support people get recruited from mental asylums. One last ditch attempt to fix the latency (Or just lower it a bit) would be to get your line/node checked for connection noise by an Engineer. But good luck getting that done as Reliance is oblivious to customer complaints/issues.

yeah im an airtel user but thanx for info dude...what shud i do now ?? i m sort of confused now....shud i go for tata broadband or get my airtel 512 kbps connexion replaced by 4 mbps (but someone says speed has very less effect on ping) ....Give me the best possible suggestion...And 1 more thing ..Since i shifted to my new house 3-4 months back , no one in our apartment had an airtel broadband and thus no airtel coverage was there here.., so is there a possiblity that they shared my connexion is borrowed from the setup in the appartment opposite to mine ..will that be affecting my speed ? I will be highly grateful if u take pains to reply ...Whats the best i shud do to get a 200 ms ping with european servers...

Haha, my mistake then. Last time I post while watching something.

Nonetheless, the principles still stand. Can get your line checked for noise, or opt for TATA for low EU pings. Though to be honest, assuming you do get TATA and/or magically get good routing to EU, 150 latency is ridiculously high compared to the norm for games like CoD, CS, Battlefield or basically any other shooter that relies on twich aim (Quake, UT etc) or is much reliant on hitboxes (CoD, BF) CS is sorta on the neutral ground as Goldsrc's netcode is really good.

I'd recommend giving Team Fortress 2 a try -- you can play classes like Scout, Sniper, Demoman on relatively high pings (150+) and play projectile classes on Asian servers (SH, Eclub, Trilogy etc)

In the end though, people here, specifically Indians, are extremely limited as to where we can play games.

Apologies for any discrepancies, I did not go through each and every post in the thread -- not the best approach, I know.

    Cheers!

@ abbhorence .. I dont play such heavy games .. im playing a normal light game Tennis elbow 2011 because i m a die hard tennis lover so we play online tournaments ....so u suggest to go for tata broadband ..i saw their plans .. and found out Infinity 1Mbps SYM PLUS with 1 mbps download speed ans 1 mbps upload speed and they are also offering 1 static ip and 1 domain name...charges Rs 2950 for 2 months ...a bit costly lol.....

Well this is annoying, I posted a reply last night, I remember - but seemingly it didn't go through. Ugh.

    Anyway, I'll just summarize my wall-of-text reply that went into the abyss;

Test TATA if it's accessible to you and check latency. You don't need 1Mbit connection for good latency, 384/512k will do just fine. Reliance also gives sub <250 latency to most EU servers (Servers in Britain give <210 usually) NL/Germany (Where most of the data centers/server hosts are) give 230ish. You can opt for them if they're available in your area of residence.

TATA is notorious for having asinine Customer Support and general service, so that's definitely a territory you should avoid getting yourself into if possible.

If you can afford to, I suppose you can get TATA connection for pings and another ISP for downloads, the cost would probably end up being in the Rs.2,000 area for each month, though.
