    Default Mayur & Atanu:

The ritual you are following is not the normal procedure. It is just a workaround. If you are happy doing this pulling out cable from PC -> connect to Router with MAC cloning exercise, good for you..

IMO: We all need to mount pressure on Reliance to let any device irrespective of the Vendor Class Identifier get IP addresses from their DHCP Servers.

I am already following up on a complaint..

From the experience of other members here, Reliance looks at these issues only when a large number of people complain.

    Default I forgot to mention..

Now I am using Dapper Drake.. i.e. Ubuntu 606 LTS.

    i.e. 2.6.15-29-386 #1 PREEMPT i686 GNU/Linux to be precise

Really these ditribs like Ubuntu, Knoppix etc. are spoiling the old school Linux programmers with the easy installers:-)

I had to delete the leases file (in /var/lib/dhcp3) once since it was throwing an error that the leases file was corrupt.

Since 2nd half yesterday I have been using Linux and always got an IP. I released and re-acquired to ensure that the solution is in fact working.. Will observe some more time and then convert this box into an access point.

    Cruise,
I tried with dhcpcd on debian with MSFT 5.0 and I did not get any IP. I verified with wireshark to check whether MSFT was present also. I have yet to try it out with dhclient though

    Default Great work cruisecontrol :)

    Thanks cruisecontrol !!

was banging my head becaue of this problem. I am at hyderabad and was using (sharing) the airtel connection of a friend using my router, until the reliance people came along.
Not having the router work was really cheesy to say the least.
are the reliance people not allowing routers because they have a wireless router type modem for laptops themselves ?
othewise why the discrimination between wimax and normal (wired) broadband ?

    Pk_rulz,

Sorry, I couldn't answer earlier since I was busy with a newborn at home.. Will try it on 7.x. if I get some time from diaper changing duties :-)

    hopper,

I feel Reliance doesn't want consumers share the Wimax connections with neighbors.. and they must have observed such usage.. In fact I use my neighbor's BSNL wifi connection for all serious work since Reliance is very unreliable for any serious work e.g. connecting to office VPN to give a presentation over net or doing any collobarative work over net etc.

Another reason could be that Reliance might have copied their DHCP server config files from some University servers in the US where they apply different rules for different kinds of devices in the network. Since the network folks @Reliance are dumb, they may not be able to make changes such that the CPE routers work in their network..

    Default Okay Finally its working

I got this SO CALLED WiMAX installed 2 days back and the best and THE ONLY GOOD THIS IS THE SPEED. I was all thrilled and got myself a WRT54G Linksys SOHO router. I have supported this product long time back but glad that the interfaces were fresh in my mind. I thought this is a PPPoE connection and did the necessary setup on the router.. Kaput!!! then I did a MAC clone from my PC to the router, changed the router ip to 192.168.1.2, SET THE INTERNET CONNECTION TYPE AS "AUTOMATICLY ATTAIN IP" and guess what the router got an 124.125.. ip address that it is supposed to..

Now 1 and the only 1 thing that amazes me is i no longer have to put my username and password to access internet... it takes it by itself...

Any suggestions on attaining an ip from this STUPID and USELESS modem bit quicker?? anyone??

    Best Sunil

    Thumbs down Cruize...

My Dynamic IP is restored back after one month of disconnection. They were unable to configure static IP in my area as there were lot of signal fluctuations. My case is wtith them as an R&D. Since the last 2 days it has started working. i am using dynamic IP now.

I have configured linksys router. Problem is whenever there is a power cut, my flat generator gets up in 3 mts. Meanwhile, the IP gets lost and i have to connect the chord to the laptop and get an IP by repairing, then log in and then connect it again to the router to use it wireless way.

Do you have any idea to avoid this step...... During power cuts its getting difficult.. can u help me.

Hi Cruise ... Congo for the baby so its a gal or a boy ....

Well I dont care wat Reliance wants ... I care wat I want and I m quite sure with Linux being open source its definitely possible to trick any machine to think that it is talking 2 a windows machine .... U know even Microsoft site passed IE on Wine as geniune windows ... digest dat

And yes 3Comm routers can be re imaged with Linux ... google for open wrt ....

let us try together ... The humble GNU shook the MS empire ... together atlst we can crack Reliance ( that 2 with dumb guys)

    Cheers
    Pk
Ps: I am waiting 4 ur tests with Ubuntu may b u should try directly on hardy now... i will also be upgrading soon

No doubts about the dumb part They might have copied the config and then successfully convinced their not so bright bosses that this is a feature not a bug

I am using Fedora core 8 on my machine. I used the dhclient -V option to set the vendor-class-identifier to "MSFT 5.0"
Now the box ia able to aquire an address 123.xxx.xx.xx. When I try loggin in onto the reliancebroadband website using the Mozilla browser i get an Authentication failed message.
Any inclinations as to why ?

    Also,

I was able to enable telnet on the WGR614 v7 router. I went through most of the commands related to dhcp but was unable to find a way to change the vendor-class-ID to the windows one.
Any idea if this can be done ? if yes how ?

    Unhappy Vendor Class ID update

I tried vendor class id in dhclient and no luck.
pk_rulz let me know if you have any progress. I am using debian etch and dhcp3.
Cruise I have attached my wireshark screenshot. Let me know if I am doing something wrong.

And reliance guys if you are ever reading this .. please spare us the agony and update that config file!

    Thanks.

Default DD-WRT Vendor Class field setting

Hi, anybody who has flashed their router using DD-WRT; have you tried going to Administration --> Services and putting in MSFT 5.0 for the vendor class? I think this should solve the problem.

Pk_rulz: Thanks! It's a baby boy.. Really don't have time to try anything now-a-days. In fact Airtel laid cable to my street and I am just waiting for my good old Airtel connection to disconnect Reliance. Reliance folks are becoming worse. They refuse to give waiver since I didn't call and file a new complaint everyday for the duration I wanted waiver. They have an automatic complaint closure mechanism whereby they don't check with the customer before colsing and they closed my 20+ complaints that way :-(

Hopper: Thanks for trying this. At least one more person confirmed that it works.

nascentmind: Can you pl. send a bigger JPG? I am unable to read it.

Hi Guys sorry for the late reply ... was a bit busi ...

for jesusservant I did reimage my Linksys WRT54G router with ddwrt and add MSFT 5.0 but did not help inspite of doing MAC clone

For Ubuntu VendorClass ID cant be set on the command line in dhcpcd. However I did add that in config file and did not get an error. Unfortunately I did not get an IP either. So nascent no progress on that front either ...

and hopper what did u actually add to ur config file ...

And cruise plz post ur config file contents .... by the way even if u leave Rel .. kip in touch ... feels good 2 b surrounded by similiar kind of guys

    Cheers
