Your dream is a pretty distant one for the time being.. Dont see that happening for atleast 4-5 years.

May be with 3g in place we would have some stable wireless broadband services but I doubt it that they would have a reasonable price for those connections.

Bsnl evdo looks promising but its still in trial.

I think the limiting factor is not the technology, we already have cable net as well as ADSL and even Wimax. All these are capable of providing highly reliable and fast internet service as far as the technology is concerned.
But the main problem is lack of coverage and lack of competetion. In most areas consumers have choice of only one or two broadband internet services. Due to lack of choice with consumers, there is no real motivation for the ISP's to improve their services as they are going to get their profits regardless of the service they provide. The quality of service and internet speeds and everything is directly proportional to number of Broadband service providers in an area.
In western countires, there is a lot of competition among companies to get customers and at any given location the consumer has a choice of several high speed internet service providers. Naturally the service over there is not only cheap but highly reliable. I agree with the admin that only time is the solution to this, as it may take several years for all ISP's to extend their coverage beyond prime locations.

You are absolutely correct. Competetion is the magic word which will bring them all to senses

What makes you think there is no competition now ?
There are now enough players in the BB arena so that multiple options are available to a consumer (atleast in the bigger cities & towns). But we all know that they are all equally rubbish ! And what if they form a cartel ?

Who amongst all the players do you consider to be the benchmark ? I dont consider anyone to be good enough.

I think the problem is complex one - it involves the consumer wants (better/faster/reliable BB), governmental regulation, the service providers iniatitve's, marketing ability, cultural change and most important of all services/applications availibility to "justify" the need for better BB.

I am not saying that the above dont exist, just that atleast some of the above factors need to become really important for things to improve.

my 2 paise.
cheers

Home BB is not a priority for the government and hence BSNL/MTNL may not be hyper-active on this front. Still I am quite impressed by BSNL's service considering what they are, their legacy and their footprint.

Other ISPs are conventrating on corporates and businesses and hence consumers are on lower priority right now.

And finally none of the ISP have enough infrastrcture to provide world-class services as yet.

Come to think of it when there are debt-ridden farmers commiting suicide, poor people not getting food (never mind what Bush/Condalezza Rice say), poverty, sky rocketing prices, will BB come up on anyone's priority and more accurately does it deserve to be on priority? OK. Not trying to start a political debate here but let us (not the politicians) address the core issues and raise voices against (the non-addressal of) the same.

Well everyone has his/her needs in his/her own area. You cannot say that since people are going hungry in some places its better to skip evening snacks as its not a priority!!
If in my bill customer service charges are included I would expect them to provide it. We pay the salary of these inefficient people indirectly right?
I just hope these companies with their poor services don't form a cartel.

In my opinion there is no competetion atall amongst broadband service providers. I am at Newdelhi and in my area the only two isps are sify and Mtnl and Mtnl exchange is more then 5 kilometres which actually pushes it out of the competetion as every mtnl connection I know of in my area has frequent disconnection and very slow speeds issues.. so Mtnl is out is it not? Sify on the other hand works on and off and provides good speed but it just drops every now and then.

This is not called competetion. When I say competetion ... it means a few broadband service providers which one can choose from and is not very expensive to switch thats whats called competetion.

In my opinion if Airtel and reliance become available along with sify and mtnl as we already have them will create a little competetion but this phenominen needs to be repeated all across the country.. not just the metros.

The customer service staff doesnt even know how to behave over the phone leave alone sorting out connection problems..

Competetion is still miles away.

If you are running a marathon and you can complete it in 5 hours and the rest of the competetors run the same distance in more then 10 hours then thats not called competetion although there are numbers... hope I am making some sense.

All the cities in India are so unplanned.. Even the capital.. India is a huge mess created by us Indians and there is no shortcut out of it.

This babudom has screwed us all in a big way. Show me one developed country whose cities are in such a mess.
