Default Router causes loss of speed?

I use Reliance WiMax for my internet.

I recently set up a Dlink DIR 300 router to enable me to have wifi access to my internet.

However, I've noticed then when I don't use the router and connect to the internet directly, I get download speeds of 37 kb/s. Whenever I use the router in the middle, My download speeds never go above 24 kb/s.

My PC is the only machine using the connection. I see this problem whether I access the internet over the wifi, or even if I use a LAN Cable to directly connect the PC to my wifi router...

My question is, is this drop in bandwidth normal for wifi router setups? Or am I missing something here?
Is there any way to fix it?

[Side note: I have set up port forwarding for port 80 to let me keep my web server accessible from the internet, like any self respecting web server should.]

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

normally and in any case router never affects your download speed. You may need to check MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) in advanced setup of router, try to make it 1400 or 1452 that can help you and apart from this you can try to reset router and config it once again it may be a problem with router like megnatic interface or something
    Please check and update

No its not normal to get reduced speed via a router... There has to be something wrong some where..

Try resetting your router and set it up once again from scratch if its not too much hassel for you.

I use a wifi router and have never experinced any reduced speed as compared to when I use the connection directly.

I hope you have security enabled on your wifi router... in case some one is leeching onto your connection.

    -------
Try setting MTU value at 1492 and see if that makes a difference in throughput.. If it doesnt keep reducing the value by 100 untill you get the best results and stick to that setting.

Please dont forget to update us all here if things got better.

dont need to reduce it below 1000.

best MTU size which is suggested is between 1400 to 1492 but in some cases 1252 also works good so please check and update here

I changed the MTU settings to 1400 and 1452 in turns, saved the changes, and noticed
    no change in my speeds.

I'm positive that there is no magnetic interference with the router. It's far away from everything, and the closest electronic item is my TFT monitor. :/

I've already tried setting the router from factory settings twice over. I still don't see any speed increase.

Anything else I might be missing out on?
Here's the non standard settings i'm implementing:
    - static ip for my PC (as i need to host a web server)
    - port forwarding for port 80 to my PC's ip (as i need to host a web server)
    - hidden SSID for WiFi (I doubt this makes a difference, as the slow speeds happen even when I'm on the wire.)
-port forwarding for port 42000 for utorrent (Again, i dont think this makes a difference)

Should I reboot the router every time I change MTU? I think just saving the settings is enough...

You would need to reboot the router every time you change the MTU value for it to take effect.

Please try reducing from 1492 onwards and bring it down by 100 every time till it reaches 1000 or 992 for that matter.

I suggest you try downloading a file from rapidshare and also a speed test on one of the speed test sites to check your speed.
I am 100% positive this will sort out your issue.

Just keep the values which give you th ebest results.

The router should not hinder in the speed .. the only thing it would have its impact on is latency and that to to the tune of 1ms and no more..

Any difference in speed will be too small to measure in other words it should be the same with and without the router.

I tried going down in intervals of 20, from 1492 to 1392 but no effect.

    I'm tired of doing this.

I'll try a different approach now.
I have two LAN adaptors AND a wifi card on my PC. I'll let my PC connect directly to the internet and then use the 2nd LAN port or the wificard to broadcast the internet over my house.
    *sigh*
    *goes back to research*

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    I give up!!

I'll settle for low bandwidth on wifi.
I think I'll just hook it up when others need access to the connection. :/

Wierdest thing. It's fine now. My bandwidth is back to normal even over the router.
The only thing I have different from when I started off is that my MTU is 1452. But the speed normalised only an hour ago... I'm still wondering what the hell was wrong before, but I'm not complaining.

Thank you all for your help.

I'll post a quick guide for boosting your wifi signal strength in a bit. Something I picked up off the internet, ofcourse. ^_^
