    Default Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung is all set to launch their new Samsung Galaxy S4 in India later this week. This mobile phone is going to be priced more then Rs40000 as per some news websites. I have checked the features and tried comparing with the two phones I have used in the past from Samsung that is Samsung galaxy S2 and Samsung galaxy note that I use these days and to be honest I dont see any compelling reason to spend another 40k given the fact that I spent 33k on this Note not long ago.
The only good thing that is some use to me is that it had a better battery which is 2600mAh battery that it has but then it has all that more powerful processor and supports 64GB addon memory besides a full HD screen so I wonder what would be the battery life even with a larger capacity when the hardware is so much more demanding. It also supports upto 42mbps speed and what not even though we in India struggle to get a decent 3g connection these days.

It is a decent peice of hardware but unfortunately I cannot afford to spend another 40k on a new phone when my note is not even a year old so I would probabbly give this one a pass and hopefully something even better would come on to the shelves by the time I am ready to get rid of my current phone.

What do you guys think about the Samsung Galaxy S4?

I, in a fit of insanity, purchased Samsung Galaxy S2. Yes, I call it insanity. It is a very nice phone and all that. It is light, easy to use, loads of features, etc. But apart from Talpatalk and Facebook, I really don't find it really useful. My office has given me a Blackberry, so email is also out. I spent 28.8K in 2011 and I don't think that I am going to go for S4. Leave aside S4, I never thought of S3 either.

i wouldnt spend so much for a quad core Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7, i am working on Exynos 5 Octa 5410, the issue is cortex-a7 or cortex-a15. if you are a geek/developer? will you got for a faster cpu/gpu ratio cost, samsung gives me a run for money money. Xolo Q800 Price - Buy Xolo Q800 Price in India, Best Prices n Review or Intex Aqua Wonder Quad Core (White) Price - Buy Intex Aqua Wonder Quad Core (White) Price in India, Best Prices n Review value for money i.e. cpu/gpu ratio cost. MT6589 MediaTek - MT6589 : Quad-Core Cortex-A7 1GHz+CPU Smartphone Platform quad core cortex-a7 1.0 ghz. definitely intex or xolo and not samsung. w.r.t. scrooge developer and FOSS in mind.
my opinion, yours is bound to differ/contradict.

    Back to the topic ...

Let me point out major advances of S4 vis-a-vis S3.

Looks, Size, etc.: At first glance there appears to be no difference. You can easily mistake one for the other. But on closer look the S4 is slightly larger. But quite amazingly, the S4 is lighter and thinner. The S4 is also more "grippable" than S3. But the cover is still plastic although it is covered with a thin metallic ring on the edge. These features are really a plus.

CPU and other internals: The S3 has 1.9 GHz quad core CPU (Qualcomm Snapdragon 600) whereas the S3 is based on 1.4GHz quad-core (Exynos 4412 SoC). Without going too much into technical details, the S4 uses better GPU than S3 (Adreno 320 vs. Adreno 225 in S3). The Adreno 320 GPU is reportedly 4 times faster. The S4 has 2 GB RAM as opposed to 1 GB of S3. So in effect the S4 will be able to run all applications much faster. Does this really matter to the average user? Yes and No.

While faster CPU, faster GPU, more memory will help running your Angry Birds and other such games faster and better, it makes no difference to the more mainstream smart phone features such as Internet, Facebook, Twitter, Talpatalk, etc. It is not going to transmit or receive your text/MMS messages faster. On the otherhand, it may drain your battery quicker.

OS: The S4 comes default with Android 4.2.2 (Jellybean). But this is of not much consequence as even my own S2 has been upgraded to Jellybean.

Display: The S4 delivers full 1,920-x-1,080 HD resolution on a 5 inch AMOLED display. It has mesmerizing 441 dots-per-inch, the best in any class. Comparatively, S3's resolution at 1,280 x 720 looks very pale (even though it felt "WOW" when S3 was introduced). The S3 was a degree smaller with the its 4.8-inch display. The S4's bright and beautiful display is super-sensitive to the touch and crisp and clear to the eye and the LED panel with Corning's latest Gorilla Glass 3 (the Galaxy S3 includes Gorilla Glass 2).

Once again, this advance is useful for features such as pictures and movies display. You will hardly feel the difference for mainstream apps.

Camera: The camera at the rear in S4 is advanced at 13MP with 4x digital zoom; comparatively the S3 had 8MP rear camera. The front camera is 2.mp in S4 (1.9mp in S3). Both S4 and S3 can capture videos at full 1080p HD with the rear camera but in S4 the front camera is also capable of 1080p videos while this capability was restricted to 720p in S3.

Sensors: While GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light and other sensors now standard in most smartphones, the S4 goes beyond. It has access to temperature, humidity and barometric pressure data! S4 also contains an infrared emitter and this allows the device to be used as a remote control for TVs and other such devices. Now this is completely different from S3 and other smart phones that have an Android/Windows/iOS application that works via network/DLNA. The S4 can become a true IR remote control.

There are air gestures as well that allows some apps to interact via hand movements, etc. However, I am not a fan of such gimmicks.

Battery: The S4 has a 2600 mAh battery as opposed to 2100 mAh of S3. Naturally! This is required to support the more powerful CPU/GPU and brighter display.

Security Feature: The S4 OS kernel is provided with a special boot protection mechanism that protects and separates corporate data from private.

The S4 is selling at Rs. 41,500. This is indeed a hefty price. You be the judge whether you like it or not.
