Unhappy Installing Wireless router on Sify

I have a Sify Broadband connection. I am trying to install wifi router Netgear WGR614 at my home. Since Sify requires authentication through their own dial up software and also gives static IP address, I have been unable to do so.

I tried changing the settings of Netgear and when I connect my laptop via router, I was able to authenticate the connection and get on the internet. However, as soon as I switch to wireless mode, the system is unable to authenticate and it says that the machine address as registered is different from the one I am trying to authenticate. i tried changing the settings in Netgear to use computers MAC adddress and it worked fine in wired mode but not in wireless. Can anyone who has set up wifi with a single laptop at home for Sify provide any clue.

Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Sorry sify connection does not work well with wireless...

But if you have two connections, there is a solution.

One computer with wired one should be used to login to your sify broadband. Use this computer as a proxy server.

Then using the wireless, connect another computer to the same router and set the browser settings to use the ipaddress and port of the computer used as proxy server.

This is the only way you can access laptop(wireless).

    Hope this helps.

Well..the only issue I have is in authentication with the registered MAC address. If I get it changed at Sify's end, then the problem could be solved but in such case, it will not be possible to authenticate my laptop directly in wired mode. And I have only one machine i.e. the laptop for internet access. I shall try re installing the software from Sify and see if it works.

thanls a lot for the reply.

you can register two mac addresses with sify.
Just plug your sify cable into the router and call sify customer care and ask them to register that lan cards mac addess (they allow 2 on one connection so your laptop will still work if connected directly to sify cable)

It will not take more then one hour for them to let you use your router.

Give it a try coz I have 3 computers and two sify accounts and I am able to use one account on two comps after calling them.

Hope I made some sense here

Hmm...that would be indeed helpful if so...will call Sify and keep this post updated about the same.

    Thanks for the reply

    Hi All

I called up the Sify customer care and told them that I will be using 2 machines for accessing the internet. They told me that they will open the access for new LAN card registeration and I can login after an hour. I logged in using my wireless router after an hour. I set up the Netgear router to use the default MAC address so as to register the MAC address of the router with SIFY. the first time I tried to login it gave me a different error that the username password is wrong. I re-entered my password and logged in again and since then it has been working perfectly fine.

    Thanks alot for the help.

Thumbs up GG_BTI can you post the procedure for Netgear WGR614 - Sify setup

    Hi GG_BTI

Many of us on this forum would be interested to know how you configured the Netgear WGR614 with Sify. I have recently bought the same router and I am having problems dialing into Sify.

I am able to fix the MAC address problem.

As you are aware, the support from Sify and their service is pathetic. It might help others reading this forum to get started quickly.

Administrator can you please setup a FAQ section were such setup problems related to Indian broadband providers can be stored as setup solutions or configuration solutons.

Also can you email GG_BTI to respond to this thread, he may no longer be reading this forum.

He was here on the 9th of jan so he probbably will come by your post sooner or later.

I cannot e-mail him for this purpose as its against the registration terms and cond he signed up for.

Will try and spare some time for the FAQ idea and I appreciate your efforts to make this forum better and I agree this FAQ data base would be a great help for broadband users in India.

    Hi All,

The settings of Netgear are pretty simple if you are able to get Sify open the registeration of another MAC address.

Log on in the wired mode to the Netgear router. and in settings check the box where it says that your ISP requires login...however you need to provide the static IP address as SIFY gives static ip....provide all the details including the DNS and gateway details....after this set up your wireless SSID which is pretty much as per the manual provided by netgear.after this when you turn on the wireless access of your laptop....configure the IP address of this connection manually as 192.168.1.2 3 or whatever and enter the DNS of SIFY in that Wireless connecytion....you can also obtain the ip automatically and still enter the DNS servers address here....this is very important and wwould be the probable reason for you not to connect. after this you are done...and connect to your wireless netwrok and you will be able to logon...provided sify has opened the registeration for additional MAC address.

any other specific query...do let me know here...I do keep coming back to check this forum.

    cheers
    GG

    Question

    Hi guys,
I called up the sify CC to register the new MAC id. They asked me to connect the broadband cable to the router and tell them the message thats coming up on the pc I asked him about what message is supposed to come up and he himself was not sure. He told me that they will get some kind of an indication at their end that the new mac id is connected to my sify account and only then they can add it to my login. I'm totally lost here. Could any of you please tell me how you got your router mac id registered at sify.

Its not as complicated as you think it is Shamjithrp,

All that means is connect sify cable to the computer and start sify client and you will get an error message saying the machine is not registered with sify. Then call sify customer care and they will have a record of the mac address of your new lan card and they will register it for you and this process should nor mally take less then an hour.

Any more problems? give us a shout here.

    Regards
    Parminder

Dont do anything just plugin sify cable into your router and turn the power on for your router and call sify guys he will confirm to you that yes they have the new mac address.
Feel free to ask any more questions.

    hy guys,
i hav a sify connection in southbombay i asked the sify technician,he said that since sify uses a client to login ,the MAC id of the computer u are using to login and not of the router is sent to sify so changing the MAC id at sify's end doesnt go to well with the router. So i figured out one way to bypass the sify MAC cloning mechanism simply download MacMakeup (search for it in google) and change all the mac ids of your other computers connected to the network (wired and wireless ) to the original one registered at sify and individually run sify client on them for accessing the net. Note: If u have the client logged in on 1 comp dont do so on the other.Incase of queries pls fell free 2 post them .

Unless you get a router, there is not much help we can give. I would recommend buying a Netgear WRG614. You can then follow my instructions in the link on the post above. If you are having problems, let us know what the problem is and we'll help.

hy see first u connect the sify cable to the WAN port of your router, then in the configurations setting of the router set the WAN setting as static ip and put in the details of your sify account .. like the ip they gave you the subnet, and the default gateway etc. and on ur desktop as well as the laptop, in the tcp ip settings assign the option automatically detect ip settings. do not change the dns server address .. on all other pcs u are using for example the wireless laptop use macmakeup (refer the post mentioned above) and change the mac id and use the sify client normally

    hope u figure it out

    Unhappy Help Me Guys !

Im having a sify broadband cable connection.the problem is that Me n My brother both have a laptop each . And we want to connect the same connection with both the laptops with an option of using either one at any time or using both at the same time(at the cost of splitting the speed) . My local sify man suggested buying Netgear switch n i did it too (so foolish of me) .. now he is saying that i will have to keep one laptop ON if i wish to use to second one ..The Whole purpose gets defeated here. I wish to know if there is a way to connect both the laptops to the same line n using any one or both at a time without having to wake up my brother n askin him to switch on his laptop if i wish to use mine !
