    Question Help Me Pls!

Im having a sify broadband cable connection.the problem is that Me n My brother both have a laptop each . And we want to connect the same connection with both the laptops with an option of using either one at any time or using both at the same time(at the cost of splitting the speed) . My local sify man suggested buying Netgear switch n i did it too (so foolish of me) .. now he is saying that i will have to keep one laptop ON if i wish to use to second one ..The Whole purpose gets defeated here. I wish to know if there is a way to connect both the laptops to the same line n using any one or both at a time without having to wake up my brother n askin him to switch on his laptop if i wish to use mine !

Hello saqizaho, do not feel let down. Your investment is not a waste. You would have been better off if you had purchased a wireless router instead of the Netgear switch. But never mind. Switch will also work - just that you will have to go wired.

Please refer to my sticky post in the BSNL forum: http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...onnection.html (Solution for multiple machines connecting to same BB connection)

In this post I talk about multiple independent connection. You have to do the following:

    a) Follow Part I - Step 1 of the guide. Configure your main modem/router in PPPoE mode.
    b) Connect the Netgear switch to the Ethernet/LAN port of the main router.
    c) Connect your laptops to the lan ports of the switch.

In PPPoE mode the main router is in "always on" condition and username/password is stored in the modem. The modem dials the internet connection and keeps it alive at all times. You do not have to dial from your laptops and keep one connected.
