Default Can you tell me the router password?

I am trying to open certain ports to increase my download speed in bittorrent. but i need to know the router type and user name-password for that (hoping that they are still kept default!) My download speeds are abysmally low (7kbps) and a lot of time is wasted while downloads for movies. Can anyone offer any suggestion?

You have not mentioned the router make/model. Usually the router username/password is admin/admin.

What you need to do is port forwarding. Port forwarding is opening a communications port of your computer for allowing computers in the outside world (internet) to connect to your machine.

Read this article (Torrents and Port Forwarding Guide) to understand the concepts and refer to PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall for further help.

Also you must assign a static (internal) IP address to your computer.

I do have an internal pc id.

My problem is that i do not know the router make. I use the unlimited scheme of sify broadband. i have asked my cable operator, but he claims he doesn't know which router is used (???). Any way, is there any way to find out the type of router? I have been searching every where on my computer & on net to get a clue. And the http://192.168.0.1/ doesn't work (PROBLEM LOADING PAGE!).

Another wierd thing happened. I opted for a 400 mb scheme, just out of necessity, and found dat my downloads (bittorrent) had jumped from 7 kbps to 30 kbps. But when i recharged again on the unlimited scheme, the speed dropped down to the prev value. Any ideas why?

I might add i hav opened the ports 6881-6899 manually (from the change seetings option in the network connections) b4.

Use Utorrent with the encryption option on.

Enable DHCP in your computer and connect your router/modem now. Check what IP is assigned to your computer. The gateway of the settings would be your modem IP. then use that IP to access your modem. Once it is thr' let us know, then we proceed to determine model and username / password

If possible paste tcp/ip properties here
