    Transfer Files

    Share stuff with friends instantly.

When you need to get someone an important file fast, Yahoo! Messenger is the way to go. You can drag-and-drop up to 2GB of files right into the IM window. This is a great way to send documents, spreadsheets, presentations, music or any other files you want. And best of all, the built-in progress bar will let you know when your friend has finished receiving your files.

Yes that's what they are saying. But what's the use of that ?

that is a good way to share files or anything, even your pics or a video
means if you have any good video like marriage video or party video then you can share it in moments (depends upon your connection speed) i think this is a good feature which can help lot many users as in mails we can not send more than 10-15 Mb but here you can share like anything and that is too without any file hosting website

I guess the speed of the transfer will be same as the download speed. I mean it will be depend on what plan we are using...

yes you are correct and it will depend upon upload speed of other connection from where you are downloading that file but still thats a secure way of transfer

So isn't it better to upload files to a free file hosting site which have more bandwidth than our connection and provide a download link to the contact instead.

But still the speed will be depend on our uploading speed. Right ?
So the contact will only get a speed of 20 or less.

BTW. My favorite is Google Talk. Google Talk have no Size or Speed restrictions and the interface is simple.

Even if you were going to upload to a file server, your speed will be restricted as is.

The advantage of instant sharing is - it is instant. Also no need of having a file server account, etc.

One may say that receiver will recieve the file at the uploader's upload speed but that is OK because this allows the downloader with at least 75% bandwidth free for other purposes.

I have a GTalk account but all my colleagues use YM only.

Yes, it's easier with direct sharing. Uploading the file to server and sending the link is a little trouble. But still I don't think direct file share is good idea if we are sharing large files. Both the contacts needs to be online and connected to do this right ?

BTW. I don't know why many people prefer YM. Google Talk is much more simple to use and have all the important features too. The advertisements are annoying in YM. I only use YM for Video chatting.

Sharing Huge files over an Im is not the best of Ideas .... cause it would be better to have a feature where u can store it like say in a p2p site .... for future users ....

You might be right. I don't think smileys as a useful feature in IM.

See the Google Talk- Tutorial. It's really simple.
