Default Ubuntu desktop apparently scares Microsoft

Recently u must have come across an article (Ubuntu 8.10 vs Vista vs Windows 7 : Benchmarking Report) in the forum highlighting benchmarking between Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 8.10. As expected Ubuntu 8.10 had superseded the other two OS from Microsoft. Seems like Microsoft is desperately trying to fight its way with open source. This can be further established by this job offering from Microsoft.

The Windows Competitive Strategy team is looking for a strong team member to lead Microsoft's global desktop competitive strategy as it relates to open source competitors.
    The proposed candidate must also
think strategically + put yourself in the mindset of our competitors.
    Great thinking Microsoft !!

i dont think a single member can help here. if they cannot put themselves in the mindeset of open-source OSs, no individual can help.

they have lost the media player battle, the browser battle and losing the office suite battle. so they can't afford to lose the OS battle.
the desktop is the USP. if that goes, then Windows would die a natural death.

even if they loose the desktop battle windows wont die ... actually the increasing popularity of open source OSs in recent times would lead to situation where OS battle will almost be nullified and we will reach a state of equilibrium with almost equal importance and popularity of both ...

Most of the open source supporter companies like Google, Firefox etc tries to drive users to the Web, While Microsoft tries to drive users to desktop.
