Default Hakia : an alternate search engine

The search engine Hakia (hakia), currently in beta, seems to be a promising search tool.

One distinction of this service over other search engines relates to question/answer facility. By framing good questions, you could obtain appropriate answers. In this regard, you can use the service along with other question/answer services such as Brainboost. Also, for certain queries, Hakia provides categorised results.

The site features something called "credible sites" supposed to be recommended by librarians around the world.

It categorises the searched links into credible sites, news, images etc. and puts them in separate tabs.

It also features a "gallery", where pre-searched content in available under several heads like Musicians, Famous People, Movies, Actors, Drugs, Companies, Writers etc.

a new project wolfram alpha claims to be computational knowledge engine.
Wolfram|Alpha is the first step in an ambitious, long-term project to make all
    systematic knowledge immediately computable
by anyone. Enter your question or calculation,
and Wolfram|Alpha uses its built-in algorithms
and a growing collection of data to compute the
    answer.
    worth a try.

    Default Other private search engine

There are several search-engine which keep their users' data private.

    One of them Freeoo.org

I've tried it, it is only a beta version it seems. But that's quite clear and user-friendly.
