    Default Video File Compression/Zipping

    Hi guys,

I was looking to compress a video file today . it was 319 mb .... i used my usual software i.e WinRar to compress it . But it eneded up creating a file that was 317mb in length , that was after i selected the 'compression' option as 'very good' .
I would like a suggestion for a video compression software that compresses videos to atleast 80% of their original size .

    Thanks

Try Dr. DivX, but you cannot retain the format.

Multiple zipping may work. Compress more than once. I have seen many file sharing sites provide this kind of file.

You can change it into a 3gp video in best quality...by help of format factory...

but i think if quality is your preference than its not the best choice..

yes i would prefer to have some quality .... and compress it only once ......multiple zipping and unzipping takes a long time

Try the software. It can compress a 800 MB file to as small as 150 MB. Only thing is that you need a specific player as not all players support the format. It is very popular and I think VLC player will play it without any problem. Compress a small file, if you are satisfied with the quality, then it is fine. I never felt there is a lack of quality.

Give pocket divx encoder a try, its also free and very functional... but you will have to tweak it for the best performance/size.

and zipping or raring does not have any great effects on video/music files. these tools work best for text and other such files.

no worries man...i hope u know that both video/audio files depend on bitrate (the kbps thingy) for quality. lossless audio is like ~1200kbps and lossless video, as on dvd, is around ~4000kbps.

now with divx u can reduce it to like ~500kbps (the file size would largely be the no. of secs of video x this bitrate. but beware that to achieve at least watchable quality u wud have to give it at least 1000kbps.

there is one more option to have a 2-pass encoding which at most times results in better quality for the bitrate applied.

then if ur video has audio that can be neglected a bit, then u can adjust the audio to low bitrates which still reduces the end video size.

and since the OP wants the video to be reduced only to 80%, you can have higher bitrates hence high quality.
    DON'T beam me up, Scotty!

Is there some software which would compress a video file .... and then expand it when necessary to its original length , thus achieving no reduction in quality .... like zipping or Raring

^^ there's no such tool for Vid or Aud. The closest I've come across is UHARC archver, however I don't find it to be consistent. So for all intents, lossless compression for A/V won't give significant results.

There is a software called KGB Super Archiver that can achieve amazing compression. Google it. I had a thread here but the attachment was deleted by Admin.

But this s/w really needs brute CPU power.

CNET has a negative review. They say it simply compress the file to the same size.

Just quoting them. But user reviews say otherwise.

KGB Archiver's developers tout their tool for its high compression rate, but its performance in our tests left us dissatisfied.

This app opens with a compact, slightly cluttered interface with the basic components: a field for listing files to compress or expand, a field for specifying the location of the output file, the level of compression, options for passwords, and so forth. We initially liked that it offered nine levels of compression, from Minimal to Maximum, but our tests with the midrange Normal and Good settings weren't satisfying.

For instance, we compressed a 23.5Mb file using the Normal setting: KGB Archiver worked 3 minutes and 15 seconds to output a file the same size as the original file. Using the Very Good setting, KGB worked 21.5 minutes to turn the 23.5Mb file into another 23.5Mb file. Not what we were hoping for at all.

When we want a compressed file, we want the output to end up smaller than the original file. That's not at all what we got with this free app with many of its compression options. Using compression rates above Good led to desired results, but that leaves several options next to useless. There are better tools on the market, including other freeware options, and we suggest you try other programs before making your decision.

I am not against it. In fact I am happy that I found this tool.

"...Using the very good setting..." You should not use that if u are trying to compress files. Thats all what i'm saying... sry if i sound a bit rude sometimes.. what to do, i'm just an a-hole at times .
