Well i only use the following softwares mostly, Winamp for mp3 s and for vidoes mostly K-Lite Mega Codec, other than that i use either Windows Media Player 11 or VLC player but mostly K-Lite Player cuz its simple and fast(reminds me of the Media Player v6, i used to call it the hidden version when i first found it, LOL).....

vlc is a gr8 multimedia player but it has some issues, like it is not gr8 at index management.
for this reason sometimes when u toy with the progress bar, it stops or shows garbled images ( mainly with mpeg1 video or DTS audio).
Try using Kmplayer. it looks like or works like GOM player. but it has more inbuilt codecs and plays DVD video too (GOM doesnt).

thats true, and only in vlc u can choose audio output channels directly from right click menu. its very useful feature.

    ok,
if u try to play a 5.1 channel audio in 2.1 environment, it doesnt bloom.
other players take a default setting and play every audio in the same env.(it maybe 2,2.1,5.1,DTS 6) by tweaking with the channel list in vlc, u will find a quality that is finest.

it was first introduced in POWERDVD .

Sounds cool. But I don't need more than 2.0 channels.

I don't think you need to do anything special. You just need to install both software in the system.
