My favorite was Media Player Classic with K-Lite Codecs Pack. But it had some noise problem when pausing. So I am using Media Played Classic skin with GOM Media Player now.

    PS. Copying my style ?

    For video: VLC Player
For Audio: Jetaudio with MP3 module (simplest interface and realy good album management)
I occationally also use DivX and RealPlayers

    For Video...VLC or GOM player.
For Audio, winamp...great interface & lots of customization.
You can use Aduio enhancing plugins with it.

Latest version of VLC player has controls in full screen too... that has enabled me to zero in on VLC for all video files...

For music winamp works for me...

I use Media Player Classic which comes along with K-Lite codec pack. Had problems displaying certain subtitles in VLC, hence switched to MPC.

    VLC with K-Lite Codec pack.
BTW did you know that if you name the subtitle file with the same name as the avi file then VLC autoloads it when playing the movie (You don't have to load the subtitle file seperately from the menu)... I discovered this feature accidentally, but of course both files must be in the same directory.

The movie file name and the subtitle file name has to be the same, apart from the respective extensions. Then VLC and media player classic will autoplay the subtitles.

It's not just VLC, almost every media player can do that.

eg: Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, GOM Media Player etc.

yes. but you can also use subtitle files with different names. you just need to drag the subtitle file on to vlc player while playing a movie ...

U can use VLC Media Player to play the video. Else u can install the necessary codecs by installing K-Lite Codec Pack and view the video

BTW .mkv stands for Matroska video.

Thats strange indeed. Are u not able to play the file using the integrated Media Player Classic of k-lite? If not, i suggest u download and install the latest version of the pack or VLC Media Player.

MKV means "matroska video" and it is a "extensible open standard Audio/Video container" (AVI is a container, too!). This file format combines several videostreams, audiostreams, subtitles, chapters and information in only one file. It supports new standards like 6-channel AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio or x264 video.

To watch these files you need just GOM player or VLC media player (no support for 6ch AAC at the moment, plays it as 2ch). If you want to use Media Player Classic you need some addons: ffdshow decoder + Haali MediaSplitter + VSfilter.

Both are literally the two sides of the same coin. Both softwares contains codecs which are necessary to play video files. Depending upon the individual tastes, people can opt for klite codec pack or xp codec packs.

Ofcourse it does. Why? Doesnt it play for u? I had faced problems with VLC especially with the audios. No such problems for k-lite codec pack..
