We had been evidence of the browser war in 1990’s, Microsoft Internet Explorer vs. Netscape Navigator. Today and now we have various browsers – each with their strong points and limitations. The newest upstart is from Google.
Why is this important?
Google has done something that most of us never do. They've put their capital where their mouth is. Rather than complain about features, or speed or whatever, they've done the unthinkable – they've released something that they think fixes the web. I think they are on to something.
First thing I notice right off the bat is that the speed of the web is so fast. Pages load in a fraction of time over any other browser. I didn't think I would notice – but WOW! Pages seem to just open without really loading anything.
The next thing is the clean interface. There are tabs, tabs that work, [ ie7]. They are easily opened, easily moved and if one page hangs up – the other tabs are unaffected.
Next cool thing is the applications option. Basically you load up Gmail or Google calendar, then click on the Create application and it makes a “desktop experience” application on the desktop. Pretty cool.
The actual gold in all of this is, rather than lock the whole thing down, Google had open sourced the whole darn thing. That means that any of the other browsers – Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc – can download and integrate or emulate the solutions that Google engineers had implemented. There philosophy is that if the web browser code can be use to improve everyone elses browser than they have reached the objective of creating their own browser.
What does this mean for you?
Not much really. If you are an Internet Explorer user – then this is a tremendous improvement. This browser absolutely clobbers it. Try it and you will not be disappointed. Feature for feature this browser competes well against Microsoft's offering.
Will it replace Firefox 3 for me?
Not even close. Firefox is an ecosystem browser. I can browse mail, use the net, use FTP, use great web development tools. Firefox is extendable, and for a power web developer, it is irreplaceable. Even features like spell checking form data is missing from Chrome. Not to mention my beloved mouse gestures!
Conclusion
On the whole if you are an IE user than go download this to replace IE. If you are looking for more from the web than just a browser then use Firefox. I think that the new methods of rendering Javascript as well as the speed improvements that are in Chrome will quickly find themselves into all browsers.
