Hotmail accounts older than 2 years now have 1 GB storage

Google might have changed the webmail market scene with the launch of the Gmail service 2 years ago, but things are changing slowly for Hotmail users.

Microsoft has just announced that they are enhancing the storage capacities of hotmail accounts to 1 GB now. However, this is applicable for only those users who have been using the service for more than 2 years.

These hotmail accounts typically have just around 250 Megs as storage capacity. Google’s Gmail currently is offering more than 2.5 Gigs of storage space. More importantly, Google promises infinite storage capacity on Gmail as the capacities are increased by a little bit every passing second.

Alex Stewart, Asia Pacific Regional Director, Online Services Group, Microsoft spoke about their plans with the Hotmail webmail service: “As we continue to ramp up our Windows Live services across Asia, we also remain focused on enhancing the capabilities of the MSN Hotmail service for our users.”

The company added that they have also extended the expiration period for inactive accounts from 30 days to 60 days for those accounts that are more than two years old. Still not good enough when compared to Google’s Gmail service.
