There are 2 discrete units in a computer to process data – CPU and GPU. The former handled the general processing of the whole computer’s operations while the latter was exclusively meant for processing of graphics.

While the GPU was meant to aid the CPU in processing graphics content, its true potential was limited to just that. This meant the GPU was lying unused say when the user was just browsing internet and doing a video file format conversion.

The new GPGPU technology included in the Core i5’s 600 series processors promises to change the scenario. The GPGPU i.e. General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units, enables a processor to use the graphics card for performing computations involving processing generally done by the CPU.

Of course users will need to use a separate / new chipset/motherboard to take advantage of this technology. However it is indeed possible to run in on a P-55 motherboard, only that the integrated GPU’s functionality cannot be availed.
