Default Software Review: Backup Platinum 3.0

Backup Platinum 3.0 is a software application for taking backups of your data. This tool suitably fits the phrase “Good things come in small packages”. A mere 2.3 MB of executable setup file can be downloaded from the site and you can then start with your 30-day evaluation period. The download is available both as an executable and as a compressed version.

The website does not ask you to register or fill up forms to download this software. The install setup is simple and has standard setup features. It has a Windows like “tip of the day” feature that comes up the first time you run Backup-Platinum. This is probably also in sync with the fact that this software works on all Windows versions starting from Windows 95 and that the tool is specifically “Designed for Windows XP”.

Backup Platinum gives you a clean explicit interface to work with. It allows you to take backups of all kinds of media. Be it a folder or a file of any kind.

You can use this tool to take backups of your data that has been stored in any local media (Hard disk/CD/DVD) or on your local network. A good feature that the tool has is the backups that can be taken from and to your ftp location on the Internet. So, you can take backups from all kinds of locations to all kinds of locations like your local hard disk, or a network location, or burning the data a CD/DVD disk and lastly uploading the data backup on your ftp.

The tool gives you sufficient settings options. The backup process is guided using a wizard and can be a bit challenging for the novice users of computer technology. The data to be backed up can be either encrypted or stored in the “as is” form. The encryption requires the user to set a password for retrieving the backup later on. Helping the user save on space, Backup Platinum also allows you to compress your data in a zip format.

For users who keep taking frequent backups of their data, this tool also provide with a scheduler option where you can schedule a backup operation to be performed as per the requirements. So as to save space wasted on backups of the same data, the user also has the option to delete the backups of a data older than a selectable of days.

Another good feature is that the user can select the option for incremental backup , which means that the backup will be taken of only those files which have changed in a particular selected folder, rather than copying the entire folder. This saves on backup time too.

If the data is too big to be stored on a specific media, the user can split the data into sizes the user can decide.

Once the user has back up of the data, the user can also restore the data at some other location than the origin of the backup data. The restore feature is pretty simple and not too complex.

The tool also offers to synchronize two different locations, which can be beneficial in case of frequent changes made. You can choose to mirror the two locations in which case, original files contained in one location shall also be copied to the other location and vice-versa. The problems encountered during backup are recorded in the log that the tool generates. You can also choose to configure email settings and receive emails to receive updates on the success/failure of the processes.

The tool not only works as an application but also can be configured to work as a service, where even if the user is not logged on, the scheduled operations shall carry on.

All in the entire tool caters to all kinds of users who want some kind of a technical insurance for their data in case of emergencies or problems.

After using it for 30 days, users would be required to purchase the application. It costs $67 for a single copy. Corporate users can order multiple copies and the price goes down with the number of units ordered.
