Rep Power: 0 | Hi, Over the last two years, I built a whole blogging/ social networking site part time The Demo Its something that lets you blog, publish images and network with friends all in one place. I pay a lot for hosting this right now. Thing is, I have a machine with a 40 GB disk, that I can use as a server. I know most of you will say its a bad idea. But, what I'd like to know is, who in India provides the lines needed to connect my server to... the rest of the world. I know theres BSNL and AIRTEL. But do they provide them? Even if they do what do you call these lines? Kids in the US run servers out of their bed rooms (envy). Does anyone have any idea on this? Maybe if your've done this before or work with a data centre. Any idea who provides these kind of lines here in India? Thanks Last edited by Admin; 13-03-2008 at 07:19 PM. |

Yes you can host a server at your home as well but for that you atleast need a good 1mbps+ upload speed and none of the isps in India provide that kind of upload speed right now. You have an option of getting a leased line which would drill a hole in your pocket with bills running into a few lakhs per year. Moreover none of the India isps permit you to host a server on their lines so you are always at risk of loosing the connection due to noncompliance with their policies. Just spend $6-10 per month and you get some excelent hosting from hostgator. What exactly is your budget? |

Rep Power: 0 | Never thought of the budget part. Just wanted total control over the server. So I could keep adding and changing stuff as required. You've said "lakhs". I had no idea it would be that costly here. There are no datacenters in India where you can take your own sever and use their facilities (or something like that)? |
