Hi, I am here. I did read this thread. But admin and others had already put in their thoughts.

To access an 'ftp' site, the ftp port (21) must be open on that site. Nowadays very few site admins open their website for ftp. And then the FTP server must be in DMZ to protect the rest of the infrastructure from worms and other hacking attempts. There are two download protocols - HTTP and FTP (well, three including P2P).

It is a misconception to believe that FTP will give you better speeds.

FTP pros:
  • HTTP adds headers to each packer. There is no such addition in case of FTP, it is just a raw data file
  • HTTP encodes and compresses data before sending but not FTP. This works very well for small files.

HTTP pros:
  • HTTP reuses the existing persistent connections and hence TCP performance is better
  • Use of pipelines makes asking for multiple files from the same server faster
  • Because of automatic compression, makes less data get sent
  • In FTP, the transfer is serial and interface has to wait for current packet to be downloaded successfully before requesting the next packet. No such command/response flow minimizes in HTTP.
Ultimately the net outcome of course differ depending on specific details, but I would say that for single-shot static files, you won't be able to measure a difference. For a single shot small file, you might get it faster with FTP (unless the server is at a long round-trip distance). When getting multiple files, HTTP should be the faster one.

Thanks.

FTP is a protocol that was invented before HTTP. Because of its security risks (HTTP has them too), most admins now allow FTP via secure methods only (SFTP). SFTP port is 22. But even then security experts are still shy of allowing FTP (or SFTP).
