Default Mathew Hayden hang his boots

Australian opener Mathew Hayden announced his retirement from international cricket yesterday. He was recently dropped from one day squad. And after recent run of low scores in test cricket, his place was not secure in test squad too.

No Australian opener has scored more Test runs than Hayden and he is behind only Ponting and Steve Waugh on the local hundreds' list. The final time he reached three figures was against India in Adelaide 12 months ago.

He had been keen to push on until the 2009 Ashes but a disappointing home summer in 2008-09 prompted him to announce his retirement.

Yeah...saw this news early morning....I think Phil Jauques will fill in the place of Hayden....

Hayden,of late was not in his best form.He strugled in India...
Who can forget the 2001 series in India....Hayden was in his peak form against India during that series...

Phil Jaques is too prone to injuries... He'll have to work on his fitness to match Hayden's consistency... But still he is the best option for Aussies along with Katich to open in Tests...

Hayden certainly tormented Indian bowlers of this decade(except in last series)... He was closest to Sir Viv Richards in terms of built and aggresiveness...

I heard that Phil Jaques has recovered from this injuries...or else they can even try this guy 'Warner'....Lets see how Warner performs in today's T20 match.

As Sunny Gavaskar said, people should quit when they ask "why" and not "why not". No doubt Hayden was a great player and opener (although I question Ponting's claim that he was the world's best) but he was getting on. At 37, there was a question on how long one could give him more chances at the expense of a younger player, who would serve long term interests of the team.

Hayden played the SCG test when all were questioning his inclusion. Sadly, many sportspeople think that they can continue and do not hang their boots when the time is ripe.

Maybe, it is the lure of money, fame, spotlight, etc.
